I have this friend who's a really talented student fashion designer. We got to talking and the idea of me sponsoring her (so she can get her designs made) came up.

I'm totally happy to do this as her stuff looks like it could be pretty amazing (and I'd get to be the first to shoot it too).

I know a lot of you will bitch that the designer/retailer should approach the photographer to shoot their range and not the other way around, blah, blah, but I only do photography for fun so I have no interest in getting paid.
What I do have an interest in is seeing this stuff get made (it's that good).

The agreement is all very casual right now, but my concern is that if it takes off for her, where does that leave me? She seems concerned that she'll "owe" me despite me saying I'm happy just to see this stuff made.

So my questions is this: Is this just a friendship damaging trainwreck waiting to happen?

It could be, but there are ways to avoid it. Put your agreement in writing. If she is going to use your images for advertising she is going to need a usage license from you anyway. Wish you both the best of it!

I model in advertisements for my friends products and we have a mutual agreement that neither of us get paid and the money she makes from the selling of the products she keeps smile I get to keep the occasional product though!

I think if your friendship is strong enough and you can make her understand that you simply want to photograph the product and help it along it's way to production then your friendship should stay intact smile

Maybe have a written agreement just to make sure she doesn't 'owe' you anything? For their piece of mind and yours?

What are friends for, if you think you can help her out, why not?

Thanks for the input.
I guess I'm just overthinking it as normal smile

I really wanted to know if anyone else had done this sort of thing before, but doesn't seem like anyone has? I guess it's not a very common practice.

I guess you have to ask yourself are you just making a donation to her or are you interested in becoming an investor in her company? The former is a no strings attached gift and the latter requires lawyers and a contract.

It's totally a donation with just a single string (I want to do some shoots using her designs).

I guess all I can do is leave the offer on the table - if she goes for it she goes for it. If not, oh well. sad
