It seems MM is saturated with work of the same genre and style.

Garage glamor, gwc nudes, and borderline porn.

Finding works that are conceptually interesting and masterfully artistic is rare.  I'm hungry for this kind of content.

Discuss and post any gems you've found! :-)

No idea about your assessment of MM - I tend not to look at those portfolios, so maybe I'm not seeing what you have seen.

However, if you are looking for WOW, this lady has it - http://www.modelmayhem.com/25578
:S does that count as outing?

Well - I don't claim masterful for any of my work, and what you see here is for the most part not as purely conceptual as I would like it to be -  I am taking my work more in that direction,  but I would refute "garage glamour"  "gwc nudes" and "borderline porn" lol.....

I have a list called 'this is how it's done - MM's greatest photographers' http://www.modelmayhem.com/list/564366

I'm hoping to add some more names to it from this thread, if it doesn't get de-railed. Some people are in there for technical skill, some for concept, some for perseverance - talent and greatness are in the eye of the beholder, I guess. I added one of your images to it- your skill is impressive, thank you for drawing my attention to you smile

Huh? You've been here five years and you're just noticing?

Well thank you kindly for the add to the list.  It all is VERY subjective.  That's kind of been the bane of this site in my opinion.  What is "wow" to one person is "rubbish" to another and vice versa often.  :-)

I think you have most of the answer right there--That and the fact that it's pretty well impossible to come up with a concept or an approach that hasn't been done before by someone, somewhere, some way.  The "WOW" factor fades pretty quickly with repetition.

IMHO, as always.

Four of my favourite inspirational photographers on MM

nyk fury http://www.modelmayhem.com/1440919

nevar http://www.modelmayhem.com/3005

Richard Tallent http://www.modelmayhem.com/98472

Brooke Shaden http://www.modelmayhem.com/1518462

There are some exceptional photographers and artists on this site.
It annoys me when I hear so many negative reviews of MM.

Check out my ART list and DREAM list for more awesome work.

So smile  You are disappointed that MM follows the same pattern as the rest of the world, same as "real life"...

Isnt most of life filled with sometimes distressingly similar things--- whether art or jobs or whatever you choose...

And the things that we enjoy are the exceptions--- the stellar examples of "whatever" that stand out , that stand above the rest.

SO---why would you expect MM to be all that different? It is a community just like any other, with a huge range of talent/skill/taste/preferences.

Yes, there is a lot of repetition, a lot of pedestrian work here.

There are also many exceptionally talented photographers, models, stylists etc etc.

Just like diamonds, their rarity is part of what gives them "value".

Enjoy them when you find them, and spend less time worrying about the other stuff....

just a quick list of some of the VERY talented shooters local to me:

matt-h2            Mayhem #423996

Charles Nevols        Mayhem #271948

Alien LiFe        Mayhem #609661

Ethereal Pixels       Mayhem #638600

Nom de Guerre        Mayhem #1964908

NatLight Studios    Mayhem #175046

Im always trying to come up with different ideas and concepts. Not saying my work is totally unique but I would like to think its a bit different from most of the work on MM.

Not trying to put down MM photographers though because there are plenty out there way better then myself and I use them for inspiration in my own work.

Some people may just accuse you of being lazy (not me though MODS).

Of course all that you decry exists on MM, but so does some of the most inspiring, beautiful and artistic work available on the net.

Get out more.

There are plenty of talented photographers on MM.  Plenty of good ones.  And Plenty of GREAT ones.  You just gotta find them.  and they don't always have a premium membership, and they don't always spend their time on mm marketing themselves or trying to make connections.
And sometimes that gwc is learning and WILL be a great one.  We all start somewhere.  When I first picked up the camera I was a gwc as well (girl with camera), had no idea what I was doing, just experiment until i figured it out.  and now I STILL have a lot to learn.

But Art is always a matter of taste.  I doubt Picaso would have liked his very first drawing twenty years later from an artistic stand point.

I have come across many great and talented photographers on MM

Dan West is definitly one of them !!!

going to forums and clicking on people's profiles and ports is how I find amazing new artists.  Same thing I do with music on Youtube.

I don't think there are filters for GWC Nudes, Borderline Porn and Garage Glamour on MM because one persons borderline porn is anothers GWC nude, It's all subjective so it's just a matter of taking a few free hours and exploring the site.
Good luck!

Curious? What qualifies you to determine what is good and what is worthy of scorn in your eyes? I.e., "garage glamour," "GWC nudes."

Is it your body of work? Education/background?

MM is a wonderful mix of the greatest array of worlds and cultures for which there can be no bias.

The majority is amateurs so the work is going to have a repetitive nature as it is a way of fine tuning a target result, and one that makes the authors happy.

I've been on this site for a long time and have seen some outstanding remarkable work in every genre.

Personally I target classic already seen and done, far off the type of surprise captures that say Elliot Erwitt would be happy to have found.

Yet I find beauty in almost everyone, and like what I see in MM peoples work be it model, retouchers, photographers , MU/hair etc. conceptual or not.

Personally I think the few seconds it would take per profile to see that it is not something that does not interest you, is worth it when you find a profile that really speak to you.

From there you can see if the photographer has any lists that could lead you to similar work. As others have mentioned, there is some mighty fine photography here - you just have to look.

I should hardly call myself "masterfull" but I am trying to do things interesting and artistic. As you have been shown MM has much much more beyond the labels you quoted above.

So you say that it's all crap, then ask the crapmakers to tell you stuff that's good.

It's either a stupid request or a chance for ego masturbation.

There's some amazing talent that happen to park some JPEGs here now and again  smile

Neil Snape, who's kind enough to visit often and even write some tutorials is among them.

Others I'd include are Henrik Adamsen, Chip Willis, George Favios, Gavin O'Neill, Michael Donovan, Rick Day, Maverick Photo, Roberto Aguilar (fotorat), Fabrice Mabrillot... hmmm, a few others I'm likely forgetting.

Check my "setting the bar" list for some listed here and a few others.
