I just got done reading some model bios and something dawned on me. Is internet modeling the only profession whereby one can be completely negative and downright bitchy in their advertisements and still be able to sell whatever it is they're selling?

How do you know if anyone is actually buying what they're selling.  If their bios are as bad as you say I doubt they're doing much business.  Personally, I have read quite a few bios that have turned me off to working with a particular model.  Bitchy bio, next model please.

There's a photographer that I'm connected to on Facebook that spews some of the most vile, derogatory, stupid shit with past (and even one current) clients and collaborators and talks down to other photographers in the market.  Publicly on her facebook.

And she still manages to work with some of the more agency stat models in the area and pumps out the same boring faux fashion looking shots against the white paper in her brand new studio.

So, it's not just the models with the attitudes who continue to get what they want.

No. It works the same as in standard commerce. They don't sell anything because of poor communication skills, or arrogance, and they go out of business.

Never fear. The cream always rises and the dregs sink to the bottom.

Cute, but different.  Relatively few politicians are bitchy toward voters.

But it is easily handled when you run across a nasty sounding bio. (Or one written in third person.) Pass. Next!!

I just keep skipping along in the daffodil field and work only with the cute fuzzy bunnies.
Much better for the stomach in the long run. big_smile

The OP said bitchy in their advertisements, and that is exactly accurate.

Besides, even if you wanted to say few are bitchy towards voters, you must have a pretty short memory, as there was quite a lot of that just a few months ago.

Not sure I can think of many other fields where such negative attitudes can be present and still find success.

I don't know about that lol. Romney's Quote of the Year on MSNBC:

“There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what … who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims. … These are people who pay no income tax. … and so my job is not to worry about those people. I’ll never convince them that they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.”

That might have ostracized a few.

I am certain we all know of Models and Actors that are known to be a$$anine and still work.

We also all know they tend to get less work, less pay, etc. than they would if they were a delight to associate with.

I generally consider looks as well as what I know about the rest of the package before booking. Seldom book those I figure are likely to badmouth me or be a pain to work with. Usually I use their portfolio as a first reference. If they have worked with more than a few photographers and badmouth one I anticipate I am unlikely to be the subject of public wrath. But, I still seldom approach or respond to them. If they are badmouthing a list I figure the reason my name is not there is because even though their comfort zone is easily breached I have been fortunate to not have worked with them. I try to keep it that way.

I have always wondered how this happens.... I've seen plenty of models with these attitudes fade away, but plenty of designers like that still get regular TF work and paid comissions despite it, and plenty photographers too. I guess they are selling something that people want, even with the bad attitude as a side dish.

I think reality shows with cruel, unprofessional judges have taught a lot of folks that being nasty is 'cool', but it can't be all to blame. You see it in these forums sometimes - not the folks that are trying to help but come across badly or tell people things they don't want to here, but people who just want to spoil everyone else's day because it makes them feel big. Being nasty and bossy has become the new 'professional'. sad

But not or everyone though! big_smile

Depends on how they sell...

I state what I do
I state what body art or blemishes I have
I state what genres I excel or have knowledge in
I added a quote from an artist I collaborated with
I have a list of those I have collaborated with
I have a list of publications I have work featured in

....I also hate talking about myself like this but in past, a third person bio was more bitchy/rude/drama filled...

But yes, some people are down to state everything they DON'T do and very little of WHO they are or WHAT the WILL do.

-I don't prefer implied/nudes, but I'm not adverse to the idea nor does a capitalized phrase stop one from posting or messaging me an inquiry of such genres.

Personally, in any case, an artists bio or portfolio photos will either intrigue you or be off putting. Depends on what or who your seeking.

I went to a store (BIG store, not a "mom and pop" type place) with signs on every door saying that anyone there was subject search, and was being monitored at all times.  It might well be normal for that to be true, but the signs really didn't make me more comfortable while shopping.

That's why it's especially surprising that they get away with it.  Plenty of models are talented, attractive, and willing to be at least polite, if not downright charming.

In the real world, there's simply no room to act like that.  You will never be booked again.   People talk.

Models are the lowest of the low on the totem pole of importance on shoots.  I've been talked about by clients and production teams as if I wasn't even in the room.  You smile and nod and say 'Yes, I can do it, just like you asked'.

I blame Tyra (or was it Naomi Campbell first) for this misguided view by new models that being a diva sells and is somehow expected or accepted.

Or was it Janice Dickinson?

When the first sentence is "Read my entire profile before contacting me."

Followed by "I don't/I'm not here to....."

I usually stop right there.

John, the reason is because "it's so easy that anyone can do" mentality has infiltrated our society through technology.   It's no joke that any fool with some money can pick up a camera and call him or herself a "photographer" without qualification for doing so.  Worse yet, any one who thinks they are good looking enough can set up a profile on the Internet, call themselves a "model" and find these fools who think they are photographers!   Who is the bigger fool?  Bad attitudes develop for a reason.

Preposterous! Models don't eat. If they did, they would be in one hell of a better mood than posting all-negative walls of text on their portfolio.
