My luck seems to have run out. A woman in Dallas TX built two sites for me, excellent work and reasonable fees, but she's not taking on any new projects.

In searching about, I've had a surprisingly hard time finding someone competent, even for this simple site.

It isn't going to be a photo site. The only photos are the header and a thumbnail link to Amazon. All the rest of the content is just text, much like a blog. Geeks on forums tell me it could be done in half a day using WordPress (which is outside my skill set).

This isn't a casting call or a request for bids. I'm just wondering if you've worked with any web builders you might recommend. Reply here in case others are in the same boat ... or feel free to email me (go to my site and click the Email button).

just to get a better idea of what may be going on in your search. What problems are you having finding someone? Because on the surface it is very simple especially in WordPress.

Weebly.com.  I'm not using it for my current site, but I'm in the process of switching to it .... and its FREE!

I hired a designer who said the same thing, that it was easy to do in WordPress. Then she started sending me directories of themes to choose from. I had already sent her that mockup and told her that's what I wanted, or something very like it. But she just didn't know how to modify the free themes to remove pictures, or replace a text header with my jpeg.

In short, she didn't know what she was doing, and I wasted $125 on her while she proved it.

John Nack's site at Adobe is very much like what I need, though I don't want the fancy background, edging, etc. It was done with WordPress 3.5. It looks simple enough to me, but what do I know? That's why I need to hire someone who does know.

And also is somewhere within the universe of reasonable. I've had a few designers offer to do it for $1,800. I'm not a cheapskate, but that sounds like way too much for this job. I've had two other sites built for a fraction of that.

As I noted on the mockup, I already have the new domain and hosting for it. I just want someone to put together the site I need and upload to my host.

I also lack the skills of Wordpress but there must be a dozen here on MM who can do that for you and for a fair price...if all.

Im trying to build my site for 1 year now, never got the time. Did you try DA? I think that for 200 $, you can have a very creative one.

I'm a web developer but there is a reason I don't freelance with it that much. Setting up a basic Wordpress site is actually pretty easy. You can even get a free account at wordpress.com and play with it yourself.

However, it can quickly get very complicated when it comes down to modifying existing themes to fit something you have in mind. And even that isn't real hard but what often happens is that the client keeps coming back with new stuff and other changes and what started out as a 10-20 hour project lasts forever.

Which is why it is so expensive to hire a good developer. You get what you pay for.

And that is why I like photography more. Shoot a project, edit it, deliver it, and you're done.

Weddings are much easier than setting up websites for people. lol.

All that to say go play around on wordpress.com. It's fun to figure it out and easier than you realize. It's a very nice way to setup websites. smile

Wordpress is exactly what you need for this. Go muck around with it for a weekend or two and you'll figure it out real fast.

Thanks, someone has gotten it pretty much set up using WordPress. (I tried the mucking around ... and for more than a weekend or two, but I couldn't figure it out. Photoshop, yes. WordPress, no. Go figure.)

That's okay. It has a bit of a learning curve the first time or two setting up a site.

It might be well worth the $30-$50 to run over to your local bookstore and pick up an introduction to wordpress book. Or even better, check out some of these videos:

You don't have to be an expert in it but there are a lot of cool plugins and features that you can use to make photo galleries and other things without getting too deep into programming stuff.

You probably missed it, but I posted this earlier: "It isn't going to be a photo site. The only photos are the header and a thumbnail link to Amazon. All the rest of the content is just text, much like a blog."

That's cool too but you can always get more advanced later on if you want to. That's the beauty of Wordpress. It can start out real simple like the example you posted at the beginning and later on, you can go absolutely crazy with it.

Totally worth your time to learn it as you have time later. You might even find you enjoy it and end up doing websites for other people in a year or two. smile

I got a message from another member about this thread and I thought I would add that while I would love everyone's money in an effort to help those who would like to learn the process for themselves I would say check out adobe muse!

ANYONE can use it to create a site in a few hours. That is a custom website built to your needs from the ground up. There is many tuts on adobe.com but I can almost promise you that after just watching the intro you will be able to create a website quickly and easily:)

The only reason not to do it yourself is just that you don't want to do it lol the program is that powerful. Good luck

If you ever need WP help Im Extremely fluent, specially with good themes. I dont develop from scratch but I can manipulate the crap out of a WP theme through FTP and coding. WP is the poo for SEO.

The free themes are garbage IMO.
