How could you not get the message this person did not want to work with you ??
Never jumps through these kind of hoops!!! Not for anybody

However, I never get stood up by models when the model knows she will be shooting nude.

Checking references is a good place to start, to avoid cancellations. Also, work with models that trusted local fellow photographers have worked with. Its rare that I ever work with a photographer that I don't know at least one model friend has worked with before. Not even on purpose, just the sort of network that exists.

I have only had one actual cancelation that i can think of it, and it was like 2 months ago after 6 years of modeling on Model Mayhem. I have had 3 or 4 photographers plan out a shoot with me, but when it came to the choosing a date or giving me the location information, they just never responded to me. I actually had a pretty big name photographer do this to me twice, why i even tried again is beyond me now.

Since I joined mm and began my attempt to work with models I've had 2 shoots and 8 cancelations. 3 of them were no call no shows, 2 were weather related. The majority were to be paid shoots. Getting discouraged, does it get better?  What's your cancelation rate?

In short, probably not. Try checking references before agreeing on a shoot date and that will help a little bit maybe.

If someone no call no shows, I won't work with them again no matter how much they offer to pay me. For all I know they'll agree to pay to pay the deposit and still not show up to get their money's worth.

If I was supposed to TF with someone and they cancel with me without giving at least 24 hours notice and then they later want to reschedule the shoot I refuse to do it unless they agree to pay a deposit before scheduling a new date in addition to my hourly fee. Usually they won't agree to it and honestly, I don't care. They didn't respect me my time the first time, they probably won't the second time around. Same deal applies if it was going to be a paid shoot. Life is too short to work with people who are going to treat me like crap.

I charge a $50 non-refundable deposit to secure the date. This is because I do a lot of prep work before shooting (as every model should) and this is what I feel that time is worth. While shooting I charge my regular rate.

Thanks everyone for your advise.  You know, even though I've had a lot of cancellations, I have developed a couple of good working relationships with models who are responsible and now I can afford to be more selective.  If a new model is inconsistent I can book someone else instead, as opposed to crossing my fingers despite the warning signs.

+1

The last place that photographers with high flake rates look for the problem is in the mirror.

I looked in a mirror once then flaked on my self portrait.
