Running through some tests for a client.
Being nice, managed to get a contribution toward costs and will retouch some shots for the models after.
All CLEARLY explained in the casting call.
Time after time after time... "I am interested, my rates for this kind of work are £20 an hour".
Er... It's not 'work'... We're LOOKING for someone.
In ANY other industry, can you imagine the conversation?...
"Hi, we're looking for a new person to join the team. Interviews are next Wednesday and travel costs of up to £10 will be reimbursed"
"Great, very interested, where do I send my invoice for £40?"
If you state that everything was clearly explained in the casting call, then I guess you stumbled upon people who were clumsily trying to get some money.
You are not exactly nuts, but especially online there is a lot of confusion about just how the business works. Even among working professionals there is a lot of variance.
If you used the word "test" you have to be aware that online it is often used interchangeably with TF or Time For ... So inexperienced models could be confused.
As to what you do about the responses, I suppose if the applicants seem otherwise interesting you reply with an explanation, maybe along the lines of: "This amount is only to cover your expenses for the interview. If chosen for the job compensation will be XXX." Or perhaps, "If you are a finalist for the work we will discuss compensation at that time." Of course, if what they ask is completely out of line with your plans you can either let them know that or ignore them.

Reading is fundamental. Maths are second. I keep running into shop assistants, as well, that seem to need a calculator to compute the change for £1 on a 99p purchase.
In my experience, about 50% of models either don't read the casting or only read part of it. You can tell when they ask questions already answered in the casting or say something that has no bearing on the casting.

Definitely :-)
There's one charming young lady that I'll only refer to as 'M', who does this to me all the time
I even posted a casting which included the line "And M, please don't reply saying you're interested because I know this is below your minimum rate" - and she still replied :-)
