My agency spoke with me yesterday and said that they think I am more suited for larger markets and also asian markets instead of the one they are currently in. (Nashville TN) and they said that they have a convention coming up in May, that takes place on a cruise ship, ran by www.globalstarsnetwork.net and that it would be a great chance for me to be seen by other agencies from around the world. The price for the trip is over $2000 though and I don't have that kind of money right now but they said that there is a type of fundraiser that I can do to save up some money for it. I've heard both good and bad things about conventions and while I trust my agency, it still sounds like not that great of an idea to me. Does anyone have any input or has anyone went to one of these conventions before? Thanks!

Just to be clear, you have to pay $2K to go on a cruise to prospect for work on your own?  Sounds like they're probably getting some sort of rake for helping fill out that cruise to me.

If your agency had your best interests in mind they would refer you directly to the other agencies you would come into contact with on the trip, not snowball you for 2K.

It's not hard to send your port to another agency with high praise and say "Hey Agency ABC, we think you might be interested in Megan. We love her and think she has outgrown our market." They are ripping you off. Don't go on the trip and consider switching agencies.

scam! to go to asia, your agency just needs to send your portfolio the agencies they collaborate there and thats it, if they like you you go. If not, you dont.
asking you to pay  to go on a convention is very very dodgy.

If an agency believes one of their girls would do better over seas.. They get in touch with other agency connections they have over seas and sees if they can get a girl signed... The agent will usually send unretouched photos of the llama first and if the agency over seas bites they send over the girls portfolio and in some cases pay for their ticket to come and stay in a llamas apartment in their city etc.

I've never in my life heard of what your agency is trying to get you to do.

Dont trust your agency.  You could always go to a bigger city and do open calls for a couple days and stay some where cheap like a youth hostel - yes a youth hostel dont be a diva  in NYC u can get one for $30.  My former big time European agents and NYC agent used to go to IMTA which surprised me but they got paid to go and the Europeans wanted a few free days in NYC to skip away and meet the big agents here.  They would gag when telling me of the stock yard like casting at the convention.
