This is a practical way to do it. I made mine (red dice) myself, out of 1/4 inch MFD with 3/4X3/4 pine reinforcements in the inside corners.
Many many models have posed on and in them with no problems

I've often heard posing cubes referred to as apple crates or boxes as well. At least, we all know what someone means when they use that term.

I've done that as well. I had a pair of old Bose 501 speakers from the 90's that were built like tanks. They've been used as nightstands, end tables, posing cubes. I think at one point I even used one as a standalone cutting block.

AVD AlphaDuctions that is a brilliant idea! I'm so going to start looking for one!

Plywood that's 1/2" or thicker should hold its shape, if it's put together well. You will want the top to be on top of (not between) the side panels. Reinforcing the corners with small corner brackets would be a good idea.

Why do you guys keep showing old pictures of what we use every fucking day in studios?

Apple boxes or crates is the generic name for cubes made3 of would, most often stackable by way of a recessed edge made by a router, with or without hand slots. Most studios have their set builders make them in various sizes. They are in every rental studio I have every been in, and when I was doing film production in Vancouver that is what the DoP and grips called them.

Mathews is just a brand that make them. Here is an example of one you buy.

You must be used to more slack studios then, and I personally doubt the rental companies use the term interchangeably. On a film set, if the DP asks for an apple box to support a light or a leg of a stand and you hand him a painted cube from the prop department they'd either laugh at your or fire you.

IF you don't want to acknowledge the difference between a piece of grip equipment  and a prop that's your problem. An apple box is a specific grip term --deal with it. They have holes or slots for handles, fabricated from B plywood and they are never, in fact, cubes.

A prop cube is different--usually fabricated from different material, usually more favorable to painting, and usually with non-routed edges so they will blend to set surfaces.

I didn't make this stuff up. It is common knowledge.
