*The retired African American schoolteacher who in 2003 revealed she was the secret daughter of segregationist U.S. senator Strom Thurmond, has died.

Essie Mae Washington-Williams 87, died Monday of natural causes in Columbia, S.C., said her attorney, Frank K. Wheaton.

A week before Christmas in 2003, the retired Los Angeles teacher stood before a phalanx of news cameras and 250 reporters in a South Carolina ballroom and declared, “I am Essie Mae Washington-Williams, and at last I am completely free.”

After more than 60 years, Washington-Williams had chosen to unburden herself of a secret: that she, a black woman, had been fathered by the legendary South Carolina politician who had built a long Washington career as a champion of segregation.

Opinion: I'm glad she lived long enough to expose the truth.

RIP....sorry she had such a piece of shit sperm donor.

Seriously,

All those years going above and beyond to make black folks lives a living hell. Doing all he was capable of doing to treat us like we were dirt...all the while knowing he fucked the maid and had a black kid. Imagine being burdened to keep his dirty little secret for 60 years. UGH!!!! How low can you go?

Your revered founding fathers didn't have an issue with raping their slaves either, while writing some lofty words on a piece of paper. "Do as I say, not as I do" is the modus operandi of most "leaders".

Well, The Massa's always thought it was just fine to fuck their blacks...

Oops, Katrina beat me to it.  Ole Strom was probably pissed that he couldn't sell her like his granpappy would have done.

Strom Thurmond's hatred for blacks is obviously rooted in her sexual relations with a black woman and feeling ashamed because you know, his ignorant folks don't approve that.

Kinda like closeted homophobes.

Thurman was the personification of "Dixiecrat" and everything that was wrong with it.  An embarassment to Democrats everywhere.

If I were his daughter, I might have not had the courage to admit I carried his genes.  May she RIP.

An interesting story. Thurmond, then 22 and unmarried, impregnated her mom, a household servant, who was 16 at the time. Ms. Washington-Williams ended up graduating from college. Sen. Thurmond paid for her and her children's educations and apparently kept in contact with them out of genuine interest.

I don't approve of Thurmond's racial policies, not at all. I will say he appeared to have done the right thing in this instance, with the notable exception of openly acknowledging her parentage.

She appears to have led a good, productive life. That's what we can focus on. The sins of the bloodline don't matter to the accomplishments of the individual. In fact, racial and ethnic pride or shame is ultimately shallow - it's taking credit or blame for something you have no control over. The true test comes from the individual's character. She seems to have passed that test with flying colors.

Instances like this reminds me of the repigklan notion of "no abortion, even in cases of rape!"

Seems like it has been an American policy for 100's of years.

Think of the sick, twisted mentality of those who raped their captive slaves, then enslaved their own offspring and sold them and allowed them to toil and making slave men pretend to be those children's fathers so as to protect the "reputation" of those monsters.

Strom Thurmon was a fucking monster.

The "right thing" to do would have been to not rape your underage servant who could not say no.

Do you know why it took her so long to not say anything?

Because they didn't have DNA testing back in those days and for her to make such an accusation against such a monster could have meant her death.

Think about that for a minute.

This bastard sat his ass in roles of government and allowed himself to be held in high esteem and making race based statements and pushing a segregationists agenda all the while knowing he had a black child which was the result of him raping a child.

The "right thing" would have been to use his clout and influence to help usher in a future wherein her children and grandchildren could enjoy the freedoms his all white offspring did but instead he did everything in his power to make equality an impossible goal.

Fuck him.

Bastard.

Would you have preferred that Essie Mae Washington-Williams have been aborted?  Rather than go through life unrecognized by a father like that.

I would rather her mother had not been raped by a monster and maybe she could have known a father's love from a man who would have been proud to be her father.

As for any and all who try to turn this into a thread about Black men, let me say this:

Racism is nothing more than treating a human being from birth like a dog, feeding him like a dog, housing him like a dog, beating him like a dog, imprisoning him like a dog, disregarding his humanity to treat him like a dog, give him a dog's opportunities, freeing him and then getting mad when he acts like a dog.

Get the fuck out of here.

I will repeat: I don't approve of his actions in having sex with the 16-year-old house servant and keeping his daughter under wraps. I disapprove of his racial policies.

However, I don't attribute motivations to him that I don't know about. Maybe he educated his daughter and her kids as hush money. Maybe he was conscience-driven to do so. Maybe blood was thicker than water for him, and he really was interested. Maybe he did it out of a hypocritical shame.

I don't know. But it's an interesting story, and the protagonist, Ms. Washington-Williams, is to be admired.

You don't have to repeat....you have consistently shown yourself to be a fair and a descent man. I didn't question you for one moment. Trust me there.

As for the "baby daddy"....he doesn't have my respect. He on the other hand consistently showed himself to be the exact opposite of you.

So a discussion means obsession?   Committing means you are a racist?   History is full of ugly things.   Should we not remember them?  I know some people want to pretend we live in a post racial world but sadly we don't.   I've found that those who don't want to discus the past are part of the problem.   The lessons of the past should be that we don't repeat them.   Yeah your comment was in poor taste.

Deadbeat dads however they are deadbeat dads for a reason.

However it takes two to tangle.

Therefore maybe these women who like to fuck whoever whenever might want to practice birth control?

Maybe these women who are so hard up for a relationship/commitment might want to take some time before spreading their legs?

Maybe these women who are so hung up on having a baby/start a family might not jump at the first man who will marry them or get them pregnant?

I agree, deadbeat dads need to take on repsonsibility however the best repsonsibility IMHO lies with these women who are so eager to be in a relationship, so eager to have a baby/start a family and/or so eager just to get laid.

There would not be near as many deadbeat dads if women practiced a thing called birth control or waited to start a family.

Yeh, they should be like my mum and marry a man before starting a family, oh wait my dad ran off with another woman. Oh well i'm sure it was my mums fault anyway, I'm glad you've enlightened us all to how yet another bad thing that men do is actually women's fault, its not at all retarded and misogynistic.

well of course because all women who have deadbeat daddies for fathers are sluts and ho's.
