I have a technique where I use a "flat version" that was made from three exposure conversions from the original RAW file, put into Photomatix, THEN put together in Photoshop, with the pure black in the "underexposed conversion" deleted out, and the pure white in the "overexposed conversion" deleted out. I combine the Photoshop image with the Photomatix image to get the flat version, with lots of local contrast, and none of the artifacts that are present in a, purely, Photomatix created image. I then set a black and white point, and use curves adjustments to put the tones where I want them.
  This is a grossly oversimplified explanation, but accurately describes the basic process.
