Their would be many different set ups.  Really depends on the mood you're looking for.

For me I'd use a single speed light fired through an umbrella

Just my thoughts ~ MR

I work with one 580ex2 and a shoot thur. What kind of set-up could i get with just these items. I do like where the image is soft and the lamps/candle are glowing in the backgrounds

I try to start with a standard 4 light if possible, but drop the lights as I go until I end with a fill only for dramatic lighting.

Usually, I meter on the room, and use one light (strobe) pointed at the ceiling. I also like to incorporate the ambient lights into the scene. Speedlites are quite nice though, for salvage of what limited space you have in either a bedroom, or a hotel room. With those, it comes down to whatever modifier I need to create the look I'm going for. That can vary quite wildly.

I shot this with a single strobe with a small soft box and a refector for fill.

Set up: natural light entering through an adjacent window.
no metering > just using my eye to judge the available light.

I use natural light and a low f stop prime lens ... you can't be that combination with any lighting set ... IMO

shot with a Canon 60D 85mm f1.8 USM  ... and no it doesn't have focus issues ... it was shot soft to create a dreamy look wink

i've taken to using two shoot-thru umbrellas (but in bounce position) out front. no exciting shadows but it's flexible and the model can move around without getting out of the light like with softboxes. i have a hairlight on the ceiling i can add to the mix. and sometimes i add a 4' octabox behind me for fill. sometimes i'll bounce a light off the ceiling. i generally prefer it light and airy (porn lighting basically). but some people go for a darker, voyeuristic boudoir style with lots of shadows.

strip boxes can be fun.
