I was looking forward to a shoot on Friday and the model texted 75 minutes prior to the alloted time saying she was unwell and could not make it.

Nothing new there but I was curious to know what is the shortest notice you have all been given when a model (or photographer) has cancelled?

Or perhaps that has never happened to you...yes pigs might fly etc etc

sometimes they just don't show up and you never hear from them again.

some guys have reported flake rates above 50% (well above in some cases).

some guys find that money talks but others have reported that didn't work for them.

if you can find a reliable way to get models to show up for trade shoots then write an ebook for everyone else.

for my part i'm not terribly keen on pursuing new trade models. mostly i just work with a core set of regulars.

The shortest notice I've had is none smile

Fortunately I shoot out of my house and I have learned not to set up a location shoot as the first shoot.

About 90 minutes.  Texted me the night before and wanted to move the shoot up but I told her that I already had something else scheduled and couldn't move it up.  Suddenly, about 90 minutes before our scheduled shoot time, she texted me and informed me that she was having female issues and didn't feel comfortable shooting that day.  Yea, right.  A little too coincidental.  Sounded more like she had something else come up that she wanted to put more priority on.  Her loss.  The shoot was for a local radio station that was planning to feature her on their website and Facebook pages and conduct on-air interviews with her.  We're now shooting other girls for that on-going feature and she's not going to be one of them.

if they seem apologetic and offer to reschedule i'll give them a 2nd chance. i've had several good shoots that way.

at least her grandma didn't die.

5 minutes......only reason I remember that rare occurence is that it was less than 6 months ago.

your lucky she sent you a text instead of just blowing you off. Did she mention anything about rescheduling or is she  just another want to be FAKE?

Going into my 13th year of this little cottage industry, I can count on one hand the number of flakes I've had.

Anyone who gets flakes consistently.....well, it ain't the models. They need to take a long hard look in the mirror.

Be glad she at least notified you. I have done several emails with a TF* model and finally asked her to meet up to discuss a shoot, wardrobe, poses, and now five days or so and no word from her.  To be honest her age and lack of photos makes me think is not really into wanting to be a model, maybe she is just hoping, checking out MM, I don't know. Same with a second local model. I live in Duluth MN, so not exactly model city like NY/LA. Oh well.

Definitely non-apologetic.  She emailed, texted and called me numerous times after that date to have me look over contracts that she'd received.  99.9% of them were Nigerian Scams.  Then one day, I contacted her via text to see if she was available for a particular project where I had another model flake on me and the response I got was, "who's this?".  I responded, "It's Brad."  Her response?  "Brad who"  I about fell out of my Jeep laughing.  Since that time, I have never answered any of her texts or attempted to use her for anything again.

This is more about the definition of a flake.

The real definition is someone you confirm with and then no show and you never hear from them again. If they cancel or reschedule even 15 minutes after the shoot time, it's not a flake. It is what it is, a cancel or reschedule. The word "flake" is tossed around too easily.

In 10 years I've had 2 flakes. But I have cancels and reschedules monthly.

The shortest has been no response. 75min I consider a blessing. Its a risky business.

to me a flake is a shoot that gets scheduled and you start planning for it but then the shoot never happens. but that might be a looser definition than some have.

This, I will agree with.  The model who flaked on me was probably my fault anyway for relying on her but I really didn't have a choice.  I was mentoring a high school senior on his Senior Project which was glamour/fashion photography.  This was our final aspect of his project and it involved an actual photo shoot.  I put out a casting call in a local Photography and Modeling Meetup Group that I'm the organizer for and told any prospective applicants that this was the final day in which we could shoot so if you can't definitely make it, please don't apply.  This girl did and we were in constant contact up until the day of the shoot.  Couldn't get in touch with her and she was a no-show.  Definitely the definition of a flake.  I should've know better because I had never worked with her before and didn't know her but had to take a chance because we were out of time.  When she didn't show, I attempted to get in touch with other girls that I had worked with before but none were available.  As it turned out, we got an excellent, semi-professional model who did an absolutely fantastic job.  Her response when she showed up and spoke to the senior, was, "you're extremely lucky because I don't shoot for free but when I heard what you're going through, I came out to rescue you."  And rescue us she did.

I just found it comical that the one girl that I attempted to contact suddenly didn't know who I was when we have known each other for over a year and text, talk on the phone, and email all the time.

I once got a text message to cancel on my way to the shoot.  So to answer you question, 15 mins. before the shoot.

I also got a cancellation text about an hour after the scheduled time to shoot.  The model said she stepped out of her apartment and locked herself out, with her phone inside.  She had to wait until her roommate came to let her in.

Over the years, it seems notice, (if given at all) is getting shorter.

I have had models cancel/reschedule anywhere from a week out to no call, no show.

If pressed for an average, over the past 5 years, probably 24-36 hours.

thanks everyone for an interesting and illuminating discussion. I have a rescheduled shoot tomorrow (the MUA cancelled last time!) so lets see if it happens second time around :-)
