I am in the same boat. I have a collection of figure paintings I want to show as a grouping. I hit a proverbial wall until I came up with a clever angle. People want a good story behind the work... I have not landed the venue I am looking for, but interest is on the rise.

You have amazing work. I'd think gay guys would eat up your male nudes if priced correctly. There's some of your work I would absolutely put on a wall. However, people I've seen selling succesfilly in their own store whether photographer or clothier opened their store because they were already selling so successfully they couldn't do it out of their home/car anymore. The alure of having a store front is very great but the reality is that if you don't already have some clientelle the majority of even well located store fronts won't cut it. I would not give up because your art has merit and there must be some way to "crack the nut." Perhaps mixing in your art nude  passion with something more approachable that you can still execute at a high level? Perhaps selling out of your trunk in the back alley at Republican conventions? I'm just throwing things out there at this point.

My sister has a studio in Germany (www.foto-amling.de)  She has three display windows overlooking the square where her studio is located.  One of these windows is dedicated to nude photography.  There are no complaints and no children are being harmed.  Definite the opposite of the spectrum compared to the US.

I would try to tap the cafe society in a more liberal part of the country.  San Francisco perhaps?  target the gay market?  If not art galleries, maybe coffee shops (selling on consignment)?

I enjoyed your portfolio very much... You are most likely correct... I may be working the wrong town... I live here and thought it might be more feasible to accomplish such a project here in my own town.... Your suggestions are well taken.... Thank you very much...

You wouldn't be the first artist who had to "leave" his country in order to get critical and popular appreciation.  That's part of the nature of art I'm afraid.

Same thing here in the Bible Belt. The only galleries where I have shown nudes are in special fundraiser/event group shows for one night only. One gallery agreed to a show as long as it would be a large group show called "xxx" or something else equally stupid - it made it sound like pornography, so I rejected it. Nudes are occasionally placed in back rooms in a few touristy galleries, but most places won't show any at all. The only solo nude shows I've seen here were at artist studios or vanity galleries (the photographer rents it) for one night only. This is the main reason I haven't shot any new nudes this year. That and the fact that models are difficult to find here. It is too frustrating.

As for your gallery, I hope you have success!

Man Ray left the USA. Jock Sturges does most of his work in France.Mapplethorpe's work was taken to court...
