I had a famous photographer once tell me :

If the model is nude and looking at the camera, that's a nude photo

If the model is nude and is not looking at the camera, that's an artistic nude

To me, artistic nude means there is something in the image other than (again another quote) "balls out nude"

For instance, a nude posing majestically, conforming with natural geometry like trees and nature, walking in rain with an umbrella, knitting, baking a cake, ninja sword fighting .. lol -- anything other than standing there, or giving us a gynecology lesson.

Like beauty,  both artistic and porn are in the eye of the beholder.

If it is devoid of sexuality then it's artistic.... well not always.

If you find the universal definition of "artistic" you can start working on the universal definition of good and bad.

I agree with the eye contact statement. If there is eye contact it is glamor and if there isn't then it's artistic.... well usually but with exceptions.

Art - a personal expression; a statement of the producer's vision, emotion, or world view.
Nude - absence of clothing.

If it communicates something substantive about how you see and relate to the world, includes one or more naked humans, you're there.  Otherwise, you're not.

Depends on which image you look at Black Book and Lady: Lisa Lyon certainly are. With some of his other stuff it gets a bit more difficult for some minds/eyes to find artistic value.
Some find this one a bit too over the line

...seriously...THINK about it.

Imagine a photograph - the person who created it says it's "art"...someone else looks at it and say it's NOT "art".

It's a bit like a member of one religion saying that the God that THEY worship is the one and ONLY God...and so the God of ALL other religions is NOT God.

Art is simply "in the eye of the beholder"...

I find it's a nude that some gallery will hang. Even better if it's a local gallery. The art market is fickle, and some things that are art today won't be tomorrow and vice versa.

its artistic, when the image is more about the art/skill of the photographer, than the model in the image..usually the model is anonymous, oblivious to the camera.

True...Artistic nude, or even nude can be porn or IT CAN NOT BE PORN.  It's all about intent.

Pornography (often abbreviated as "porn" in informal usage) is the explicit portrayal of sexual subject matter for the purpose of sexual gratification. Pornography ...

But to make it more complicated...An artistic or nude photo that was not intended to be use for sexual gratification by the original creator, can indeed be used as sexual gratification by the end user.  But that still does not make it porn.

Amazon.com lets you sell nudes and artistic all day long (posters or books) but they have a strict policy against porn.

I just don't get the "eye contact" distinction.  Whether a nude is artistic, pornographic or erotic is determined by how suggestive the pose is of sexuality.  In my shots of nude men and women, I am trying to show the beauty of the human body.  The emotion I wnt to convey is not sexuality (nothing wrong with that, mind you), but that sense of weightlessness that comes when you are knocked out by great beauty.

To me, artistic nudes are not meant to get someone 'hot', they're solely meant to show off the beauty of the human form.

True. Beauty does not mean sex. Beauty is a way our soul sees the world. It is a personnal point of view.
That's why this question can be asked forever since there is no general answer.

i think the idea is while they might not get you hot they might get someone else hot. i've seen "art nudes" that were quite erotic (to me). that's where the mind of the viewer comes into play.

For me, artistic nudes are those that touch the spirit and soul and not the loins. It's the use of angles, shadows, and lighting that brings about an appreciation of beauty beyond the "OOO, LOOK...SHE NEKKID!" In these types of photos, your face doesn't have to be seen. Think of the sculptures/statues in Rome or Greece. Here's one of me done by the late Jerry Harke...

Depends on ones perception of art.
-Some find natural beauty, natural light & a man/woman's body to be artistic.
-Some prefer nudity mixed with makeup, bodypaint, headdress, accessories.
-Some find sexual activity/porn artistic
-Some find lingerie or fashion mixed with nudity or parts implied as artistic

It's up to YOU what you want to define as "artistic nudity".

Personally, I think any view of the natural body, with or without some covering, can be artistic.

So, figure studies aren't art?

Interesting.

Using mine as an example, this WOULD apparently be art, because of that whole "natural geometry" thing (both 18+)

http://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pic/15089501

While this wouldn't, since it's just the model:
http://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pic/16169171

To the OP; I think of images as "art" if that's the way it was approached, and that was the goal.  Certainly, some people are better at it than others, but at least in my mind, I can usually tell what was intended as art.

I've seen that, and the more detailed version.  But it just doesn't work with me.  Large breasted, shaved, model, in color, in a bed.  And, however good it may or may not be, I see it as much more "art" than "glamour."

If the subject is nude and the intent was to create art, it is art.

Whether it is received as such is determined by the individual viewer.

I've seen plenty of "glamour" that is unfit for viewing, let alone masturbation.
