I just moved to CA from MD for my husband's job and upon researching I don't seem to see a clear answer on whether or not freelancing for compensation is allowed here. I was wondering if I could get some assistance with that? I went to the States' licensing boards site and they don't make mention of soley doing makeup needing a license, although I doubt it would be that clearly spelled out. I have contacted a local esthetician school just in case but to be honest I work 40 hours a week and have a family I don't see me going to school right now but it breaks my heart to know that I may not be able to do what I love and feel I was born to do either. Please help!

Also I have talked to several MUA's here with varying client base, some work in salons so they carry a license (which I don't plan on doing) while other simply freelance for various events and have even doing some red carpet events and such in LA with no license, so I am so confused.

My understanding is that youa re fine as long as you are not in a salon setting, though bridal may have some requirements. CA law is often convoluted and unnecessarily complex.

My advice, ask a lawyer if you get a chance and don't trust anyone who might stand to profit from your situation.

legally you can't do makeup or hair for compensation in the State of California without a cosmetology license... There is an entertainment exception for the entertainment industry in the State of California... this covers film sets etc... does not cover Brides, proms or special occasion makeup and hair.

No point in asking a school what the laws are...they'll always tell you that you need one under any circumstance... They either don't understand the exemption or they ignore it because skirting school won't benefit them.

Most people here do NOT have a license and they do Brides and everything else.... it's hard to police the industry....the only time you're sure to get into trouble is in a salon setting where the State does come in and check licenses...   You can also get into trouble if you harm someone with an infection or in some other way because you are working illegally.  Most people just take their chances and work freelance without a license but that would be a personal decision with the understanding that you are taking a chance that you could get into trouble at some point.

Hi, I live in MN and I have the same question. I do not currently have a license although I would like to go to school for cosmetology however I have a child and a full time job so it's not in my cards right now.

Mary speaks with tenured wisdom here...
best advice? Would not think of working for hire without professional liability insurance... that most likely will be the first thing an attorney licensed to practice in your jurisdiction will share with you...

Here is the catch 22, your underwriter will most likely ask if you are licensed to do hair/make-up in CA... enough said...

All the best on your journey...
