looking at getting a new lens for my 5dII, Currently I have the 70-200 f4,(Which I would sell)  and I am eyeing it's big bother the 2.8, however I can also get a 24-105 f4 for about the same $ as the 70-200 f2.8.

Anyone upgrade from the f4 to the 2.8 and have some input ?
anyone own the 24-205 f4 and have some wisdom to share ?

TIA

I have the 24-105 on a 7D. Love it!  I never take it off.   It's the perfect lens on a crop body.

I have used the older 2.8 and the 4.  Personally I shoot a lot in studio at or above f/11 and don't need the stop of light, or the size and mass of the 2.8.  Like the f/4 much better.

As for your new lens, well it's an f/4 again so if you need the stop it's not going to work.  As for quality, it's a L lens.  Even it some charts put it below some other Ls it's good and a nice range.

Think the question you should be asking yourself is which range of focal lengths you'll get the most use out of.    When shooting with your 70-200 F are you mostly shooting in the shorter focal lengths say 70-100mm range and often find that you need an even shorter focal length, then I'd say go with the 24-105 F4.  If on the other hand you're mostly working at the longer end well then I'd say go with the 70-200 2.8
This of course dependent on what other lenses you currently own.

do you need f2.8? why pay for it if you don't need it.

i love my 24-105. it gets a lot of use. but there are times at weddings where i need faster lenses.

there is something nice about what happens shooting fast lenses wide open.

you can get a 50f1.8 for your fast lens needs. i have a 50f1.4 myself.
