Does anyone know where I can get one with squares around 30cmx30cm? Those I've found have squares much smaller.

How about making one using inexpensive black and white vinyl floor tiles?

I realize you're not in the US but here's what I'm referring to:

A friend did his entire garage floor using these tiles and it would be simple to create a background since they stick to any smooth surface.

Not as convenient as a cloth backdrop but a lot more durable!

Peel and stick tiles on a 4x8 piece of plywood.

Paint a piece of plywood? Gotta be cheaper than buying a backdrop. Pick your own colors, get some 'painters' tape and spend a couple of hours. The other side of the plywood can be something totally different.

Just my opinion.

thing is, I'll be travelling with it, so I think the plywood option won't work too well.
It doesn't have to be really heavy and durable.. the thinner and lighter the better.

The suggestion for Backdrop Outlet Platinum Cloth is a good one. Although their customer service leaves a lot to be desired, the material the Platinum Cloth is made from is particularly good for travel. Any wrinkles can be released by simply throwing it in a clothes dryer. I have several 8' and 10' wide backdrops which fold down to a manageable size for travel.

Rent a 'black and white Grifflon' from any film grip rental company.  8'x8' or 12'x12' and that exactly what it is.

Good luck.  You can also get white and gold checkered...

If you're going to be traveling, than you want something that will fold up/roll up easily.  Far better just to acquire some muslim or other backdrop and then paint the squares on.  Especially if you're using a narrow DoF, you can just use tape or a stencil, and then paint in your own squares.
