I am looking to invest in a full DSLR
I have limited funds so im trying to get as best of deal I can (putting as little of it on the credit card as I can.

I am pretty much focused on the canon 60d preferably with  lens(es)

My question is I am looking to get one used on ebay below $750
normal use or a few scratches don't bother me as long as its functions and performance are up to specs.

is this a realistic number or am I going to have to raise my bid level?

i'm looking for the box accessories  and either an 18-135  or the pair 18-55 55-200ish.

You didn't mean full frame DSLR did you, because that wouldn't be a 60D.

Other people love trying to get good deals on used equipment but I'd have to actually know who I was buying from and I probably still wouldn'tsmile

A quick search shows that the 60D(body only) is available brand new at B&H right now for $750 or refurbished(supposedly as good as new) directly from Canon for $612. I'd REALLY have a hard time spending that much for a used camera when you can get a brand new one for just a few bucks more.

Are you confusing the 60D (crop sensor) with the 6D (full frame)?

I doubt very much you'll find a used 6D for anything near $750. As for the 60D, personally I don't really see the point of it, I'd go with either the 7D or T4i for a crop sensor.

I think the OP meant 'full' as in 'proper', i.e. not a bridge or a point and shoot.

IMHO, we had a 60D at work for a while and I wasn't a big fan...

I wouldn't chose the t4i over a 60d. I hate the menu control interface on the rebels and it's smaller and the 7d well cost 1k more than the 60d. So if you are looking in a certain budget you are not going to magically have an extra 1k.

I like the 60d I got it and I'm glad I made the purchase I already owned a 5d. I don't understand why people in these forums always have to tell other people to get something else when the person is asking about a specific camera.

i personally would get a 60d over a rebel just because it feels more robust and i love having all those scroll wheels

if IQ is all you are looking for - go grab a t2i t3i t4i -

you can find 60d's for super cheap - i have mine on sale locally for 600$ haha

I have an in between camera that was fine when I started but is very crippled and slow when compared to something like any DSLR

I am a large guy  and Ive already been using  a small body camera  so even though its a bit heaver  I figured the 60d would fit my hands better and not look like a toy.

I am on a fixed income  and I am  doing without a lot to  push for this upgrade as I believe it will bump me up by order of magnitude.

I am hoping to get into a body for about the 500-600$  range  and a kit lens for maybe $100 more

by april 1st  I will have $500 saved cash  anything else would have to go on a credit card
I plan to do general shooting  but more specificly  some portrait (hobbyist for now)  I need the wide  but want the zoom capabilities as well  I plan to add a prime later.

the 60d is where id like to go  several people I know  use the 60d  even the nurse I randomly met at the veterans hospital.
......
I saw some suggestions   for some places that had cameras to check out  do you have the links?

I appreciate your help  I am a worrier and I want to get  a system I can shoot with for a long time

Ditto!

The T4i is a great camera and has many of the features that a 60D has, and even some that the 60D doesn't have, but there are still advantages that the 60D has for serious shooters, including:

+Better build quality
+More comfortable ergonomics
+MUCH better battery (1000+ shots per charge over 440 per charge)
+Memory Buffer (T4i slows down after continuous shooting in raw for over 1 second)
+Slightly faster shutter speed
+Slightly faster flash sync speed
+Rear thumb wheel instant access to exposure control (the T4i, the photographer must first locate and press the exposure compensation button on the rear of the camera and then remove their finger from the shutter button to adjust the exposure, then return to it to take the photo)
+top LCD panel

This isn't to say that the T4i isn't a great camera too.  I own a 60d and was given a T4i to use for several months and loved it (the touch screen is my favorite asset on it... I wish all cameras had one), but for advanced amateurs and pros the 60d is better for them.

My recommendation for ANY used digital SLR (that isn't under warranty) is the following:

The average repair bill is about $300.  Pretend that there is something wrong with the camera.  The camera should be priced at least $300 below a comparable new (warrantied) model.  The bigger the discount, the better off you are.

Of course, if it came to a more expensive model, lets say a $5000 camera, I'd prefer to purchase a brand new one at $5k over a used one @ $4700, so other factors of depreciation will come into play.

As many people have mentioned, a brand new 60D can now be found for less than $1,000 (including lens) or at least a couple hundred dollars less for the body only, so the $750 price for a used one is a bit more than I'd be willing to spend.

YMMV

OP:

Check KEH Camera  http://www.keh.com

They are out of Marietta, GA and have been in business for a long time and have a great reputation.  Their grading scale is strict and when you buy stuff from them you can be sure you are getting quality.  If they say an item is an 8 it is probably a 9 in the real world.

I am wondering why you feel you need a 60D?  Sure it offers a few more megapixels than a 50D but unless you are going to be making huge 30" x 40" and larger posters do you really need a few extra megapixels?  Also, if I remember correctly the main difference between the 60D and the 50D is that the 60D can do video and do you really need video capability?  It only adds to the complexity of the camera and increases the likelihood of a failure.

Check out KEH, I think you will be happy.  Good luck!

50D and 7D have much more solid body construction that was in line with the previous group of cameras.  The 60D is aimed more at consumers.  Honestly, I'd go look for a 50D, battery grip, a few lenses, and save some bucks!

7D currently on sale brand new for $929.

I know nothing about the seller, just what I found in a quick google search. There were also quite a few priced under $1100.

Adorama also has a refurbished 7D for under $1000.

Though considering the OP's budget limitation, I still suggest the T4i. I'd get the body only, and spend the extra on a better lens than the kit one.

The 60d will last as long as the 50 or 7d. "Build quality" as defined by photo enthusiasts is relatively worthless.

Thank you all for your helpful advice  I have purchased a refurbished canon 60d with an 18-135mm lens  from canon usa
883.81 with tax   should be about a week to receive it.

the 7D was not in my budget and I believe it is full frame anyway  I figure everything for a full frame will cost that much more.

I considered the T4i  but kinda the same thing and didn't want to pay for newness   touch screen and the wifi  were cute but not features important to me

the T3i was my fall back  if the 60d was too far a reach many similar features just slightly more of the budget version.

many people I know  use them and for my first camera it was more about being safe and reliable   I have never really had a chance to mess with one  and I might find out that there is something I don't like about its design  but I think as far as shooting  what I shoot  the camera wont be the limiting factor any more.

I figured a long time ago that anything above about 10mp in a real DSLR would work for me   18mp is nice but will likely lower it for the more casual shooting.
The video is an interesting feature Id like to play with, the mic input was needed to get better quality sound.

again thank you all for helping me with your advice and letting me know canon had cameras in my budget range (bairly)  why spend similar money on a used camera   than buy a factory refurbished one from the manufacturer.

If you are going to shoot sports, I'd save a little longer and get a 7D.  Much better camera, better frame rate, fast focusing, dual processors.  Not that many more $$ new than a 60D.  Before I'd get a 60D, I'd spring for a 50D.  I have one.  Great little camera with a magnesium body vs the plastic crap in the 60D.  Unless you want to do Video, I'd pass right by the 60D.

In that price range, you can also get a low shutter count 5D which is a full frame sensor and a way better cam, IMHO, than a 60D.

The 7D is not full frame- the 6D is.

Congrats on the 60...I got a used body for 600 even.  It's great.

The 7D, 60D, T4i, T3i, and T2i, all use the same sensor. All but the T4i use the Digic 4  processor too, although the 7D has dual processors. The T4i uses the Digic 5 processor.

Enjoy your 60D.
