About four years ago, I was in L.A. in a nice cafe with a model. A stranger walked up and saw the photo I taken on her lap top. the stranger gave the photo a title/name.
About a week later I posted it (the photo) on model mayhem with the title.
Ladytron..
Shortly afterward, I got a comment saying
"What does that have to do with ladytron? It has nothing to do with ladytron. Thats stupid, why call it ladytron?"
This guy must have thought of the band ladytron..
Anyway he went on to leave more rude comments.
I kept the picture up for about six months... Until it was time to add new ones..

On that stranger who gave the photo a name/title........
It was Phil Manzanera of Roxy Music, when he saw the pic he pointed (and by the way I did not know who he was some called him away saying "Phil"..)
and said "I call it ladytron, very nice" and walked away..
Some girl who worked there said "Thats the guy from Roxy Music..

and the guy who said me giving the title "lady tron" to the photo was stupid and nothing to do with lady tron..
Well.... your an idiot..........if you only knew......

When I was in Brazil, some dude raised his voice to me in Portuguese, yelling what seems to be obscenities because I accidentally bumped him. I was apologizing and telling him that I didn't speak it and he kept going cause I looked native.

I'm husky.

I was at the mall with my 4YO daughter.  I had been dieting for about 4 months, and I thought, "why not have a dessert?"

So, I got a child-sized cone with my daughter.

A lady walked by and said, "Are you sure you should be eating that at your size?"

On a related note, I have had a huge number of comments like that...but, if people only knew.  I have a very efficient metabolism.  According to Mayo Clinic, I need to eat 1450 calories a day to MAINTAIN.  My wife weighs 98 lbs and eats more than that.

When I was in Angola, another photographer criticized how I was carrying my gear.  His comment was that if I stepped on a landmine, that my kit would get blown all over the place and it would be difficult to salvage b/c of how I was carrying it.  I remember looking at him going "huh?"

It's not strange, but the rudest comment that got under my skin was a friend of mine who wanted me to shoot her daughter's wedding because she likes my work. When I told her I didn't do weddings, and I especially wouldn't do one for free, she got upset and claimed "anyone can take a picture! I can do that!"

big_smile I guess she didn't understand why she happened to like my photography.

(Aside: She hired an $800 craigslist wedding photographer instead, whose work I looked up and is horrid.)

I live in the Adirondack mountains, and we've got plenty of Good Ol' Boys.  At work, I've been told, "I don't want to get helped by no Jew."  I've actually been told that several times, in addition to, "I want you to help me, because you look like a nice German boy - not like that Italian guy you work with."

Usually I tell them that they should be careful - I'm more Scottish than anything else, and I've run men through for less than that.

I was with a "friend" when an acquaintance came up to me and asked how much to take a family photo.  My "friend" out of the blue told the acquaintance that I only took photos of hookers and strippers.

I just thought, wow, just wow, I had no idea she was that judgmental of my work, but what upset me most is that most of the models in my "creative" profile are students, friends and neighbours, it bothered me more that she was insulting them as well as my creative work.

I was exhibiting for a short weekend show.. wasn't doing too badly but there was one guy who kept lingering and making loud criticism about everything he could find to make a point of antagonizing about. In general being a real jerk for no apparent reason..

At one point I was closing a sale with someone else and he says loudly for everyone to hear,
"$500 for a print? That's a whole half-day of wages for me..Who would pay that?"

So I said something like.
'Considering the wall has about sold clean out this weekend..loads of people..say what's it like making so little money? I have no idea..'

big_smile

I think he ended up picking up a $40 print at the end of the night..I don't remember. Cleaned the whole wall out in a weekend. Haha.

Strangest rude comment on MM?

That I'm an elderly, vulgar, vile attention whore with a portfolio out of a Sears mall photo booth.

Strangest rude comment in person?
I could write a book about those.

I'm not sure if it was rude or a rude awakening, but a seemingly jealous photographer told me the only reason I get comments is because I photograph hot models.

Well Miss Katarina

If that is a portfolio from Sears, I'm heading to Sears right now! Elderly ? You are in your 40's not your 90s, and attention whore ?? Please.. what's wrong with feeling likable? .. If I looked like that I would be proud too!

Not really an insult but twice in the middle of different shoots, a random stranger has taken my camera from my hands. I'm a young, 23 year old female photographer, but I am often mistaken for even 16. I was shooting editorials for a llama's comp card. The guy came, took my camera, and told us to pose together. One other time this guy grabbed it, took a horrid shot of my llamas, basically tossed my camera back at me and said "THAT'S the money shot."

Since this is in General Discussion I assume you mean related to model/photography.

I get all the usual ones, with the two most common being the model that emails you years later asking you to take down some photo of her or the model that emails you telling you how awesome your work is, how she would love to shoot with you and then gives you her rates.

But above and beyond those routine types, there were 3 in particular stand out in mind. I'm not overly concerned with what these people think, so forgive me if I can't remember what the exact words were, but here were the situations:

1) A model who had originally contacted me about shooting, but upon followup she said she didn't do nudes and brushed me off/blocked me - I wasn't planning on shooting nudes and we never discussed it, I think she just saw that I have shot nudes, so assumed that's what I wanted to shoot without asking or further discussion.

2) A fashion model asked me for a critique and I declined saying that I wasn't qualified to critique fashion (I'm not). The model wrote an extremely rude reply. I have no idea why they'd even want a critique from me.

3) The most memorable was a model who posted a casting call labeled 'paid' - turns out she wanted to BE paid (including travel expenses by air from Europe to the U.S.). When I said no, this is what followed:

MODEL MESSAGES ME:
Sounds I really got one smile

Have a great life!

I thought it was the end too.

Nothing to do with photography but when my youngest son was about 3 he had shoulder length blonde wavy hair and we were in line at a store and this older man looked at him and said what a cute little girl he was and I said he is a boy so the man said "well his hair is so long I thought he was a girl". My hair was very long and much longer than his. I wanted to say "Here's your sign"

Oh gosh, where do I start.

Few weeks ago someone messaged me here to tell me he would pay me just to watch me masturbate.

...JUST watch me masturbate, I don't have to do anything serious like nude model for him or anything, he'd be okay with JUST watching me fuck myself instead. Obviously, one is a much bigger deal than the other one and they're totally related. I mean, usually, if I want to get paid I have to masturbate first and THEN they make me model on top of that, but this guy...he was gonna cut me a break, I only had to masturbate, no big deal. neutral

There's a guy on FetLife who's favorite past time is image theft, he didnt like that a "little girl" was being mean and pointing out his bad behavior in breaking the website rules and copyright law... So he likes to say all sorts of nice things to/about me. I think the last thing he said to me before being banned from the site for the billionth time was that im "going to look awfully good with cum all over my face, when I'm washed up in a few years and all I'm good for is cheap gangbang films".  He also liked to tell me that I'm not a real fashion model...so his grasp of the industry is questionable lol

Another person didnt take kindly to me simply explaining another persons post to them, so they called me ugly, fat, and said I could only get some old guy to like me (apparently I'm dating my fiancé because I'm desperate, I could never get someone my own age) and I'm not a "real" model. I'm not sure what they consider a "real" model, their image gallery of "things they like" was all stolen photos of naked chicks, some models I personally know, doing the same shit I do. Apparently they don't admire those girls THAT much.

an unsolicited critique from some random guy with one of the worst ports i've seen on mm.

"Ok I look at your work and you have 2 shot's that are good  the rest I would deleted and I not sure about those 2 because the others aren't even close to same quality.  ( Dads? )"

he repeatedly accused me of stealing photos from my own dead father, among other things.

I've only ever gotten 'rude' comments in instances when I have been approached for TFP, and requested pay instead. Nothing particularly memorable springs to mind. They were mostly childish 'heat of the moment' type comments.

Just the usual that's been going on with incremental variations for 20+ years: "Wow, you don't LOOK 40... (then) 50... (now) 60..."  I can hardly wait to hear the new version at 70.  Wonder if Irving Penn was ever thus "complimented."  Or other groups, for that matter:

"Wow, you don't LOOK black, Jewish, homosexual..."

"Wow, you don't LOOK that heavy..."

Uh... thank you?

I'm in that "fortunate" group of people that has to eat a ton of calories a day to stay at a healthy weight so when I was on a stimulant med for ADD I dropped down to 104lbs. NOT good at ALL. I was sick all the time,my hair was falling out and I felt horrible.

Down town at the bars one night and as I was walking out of a bar, passed a few guys,my pants were falling down so I had to hike them up and one of the guys yelled "if ya ate more your pants wouldn't be falling down!". Idiot.

The worst part was when girls would hear about why I was so thin and would actually say they wished they had my "problem". Really bitch?? You want to be wasting away to nothing??!! smdh
