I had a fan email me last night, she stumbled on a website run by a photographer that has tons of images being used that do not belong to him.  There is no credit to the photographers, just links to where he jacked them from.  So if he pulled it from facebook, the link goes to a generic facebook page, or if he pulled them from pinrest it just goes to a pinrest page.  sad

I don't know if I can post the link in here without getting in trouble but there are 1000s of image on the site and MOST actually ALL of them I saw are not credited.

I believe, unfortunately, that this is now the way of the world. Blogs, fan sites, etc., post huge amounts of stuff and don't credit anyone. Pretty sure they do it and will take down your image if you tell them, but it's based on numbers - most of the time, they'll never hear from the copyright owner.

Watermarking images is a fine idea in theory, but it won't stop most people from stealing work.

There is even a current mentality that says that if a person isn't making money from your image (by putting it on a tumblr blog, let's say), that it's not really stealing.

IMHO, it's a different world. The popular wisdom devalues art more and more, day by day.

Again, IMHO

Assuming he has registered all of his photos with the US Copyright Office, he should consult a good attorney. He has a payday coming.

Just post low-res images, watermarked.

You can't control where they go, but at least you will be getting publicity.

Welcome to the Internet.
The bulk of the images on indivduals websites like Tumblr and Pintrest are all lifted from other sites with little to no credit given. Sad to say this is not going to stop.

In most cases, there is little a lawsuit will get you. Most of these sites with stolen images are fan sites and not run for profit. A lawsuit might scare the offender into taking down the bootlegged images but there would be little to recoup in terms of financial damages.

Good advice but seldom followed.

For example, I just lifted three images from your MM portfolio and they have good resolution (good enough for tumbr and pintrest) and none are watermarked.

Yup. Those have been there a while. I used to be somewhat against watermarking. I felt (and still feel a bit) that the watermark takes away from the image. You'd never hang a photo on your wall with a watermark.

But after checking out Pinterest and reading how photographers, especially wedding photographers such as myself, are using this sharing/stealing to their advantage...
I just spent the other evening watermarking an re-uploading every single image to my [real] portfolio and blog.

Oh... and I signed up on Pinterest. If you can beat'em, join'em.

If they carry advertising in any form they most certainly ARE run for profit.

If there is no indication that they are a member here then post the link, Laura.

They aren't on here.  I searched on Google and the MM search:  http://luisegonzalez.hubpages.com/hub/A-Womans-Face

BTW:  That is one article of MANY so if you don't see your images on it there are others on that same site.

I was curious if they were hotlinking, they are not.  They have apparently downloaded the images and hosted them on their own server.  It would be a different situation if it was just a link.

Looks like it's just some generic blog-post with all the right key-words to drive traffic to his very ad-heavy page.

Oh, my! Each page has a little blurb of text about the photos or the technique used and then the photos follow. I can hear the claim of "fair use" already, which MIGHT actually have SOME potential for success:

BIO: http://luisegonzalez.hubpages.com/

Interesting, however, that there is not a watermark, copyright notice, credit, or logo in sight. Nudge, nudge! Wink, wink!

EDIT: BTW on the the top of one of the pages I noticed a notation indicating that his posts, collectively, apparently contain in excess of 2700 images and videos.

Oh, my! Oh, my! Oh, my!

If he's a good enough photographer to be handing out advice he should be shooting his own damn images!

I just burned his eyes with a comment on his site. You can do it anonymously. He'll never post them, but he should soon find out he's being watched very closely if everyone does the same sort of thing.

I think the images are just up as examples of what the Photographer/studio does. They don't credit them as their own images. You can always contact them and ask them to take down your images if you see any up.

which is still dick.

but even more dick to have his personal content hidden behind download blocking, as he freely uses other peoples work and absolute gibberish dialogue to generate traffic.

"All images Copyright of Luis E. Gonzalez Photography."

Interesting.

Personally helping myself to all his written material for articles seems like a major time saver.

BTW look at the crap he produces. No wonder he has to steal others work.

And a teaching certificate? Wonder if he learned anything about plagiarism? Prison guard certificate, so he learned from the best thieves that Florida can produce.
