Techniques are going to depend on a) the image you're starting with and b) which of the four target images you want to emulate. You'll probably learn more if you narrow the question down to one of each -- one image of yours and one of the targets.
EDIT: For example, if you started with an image like the one on the left and hoped to emulate the one on the right, you'd never make it. The effect (right) depends on the fact that most of the pixels are in the bottom one-fourth of the histogram. It's almost the opposite with the other one.
