I was asking this question to my coworkers today, and got some interesting responses.

For me, I think of the scariest disease in the world is Fatal Familial Insomnia.  Your brain literally LOSES THE ABILITY TO FALL ASLEEP.  Lethal within 6 months, as your brain de-myelinates to the point where it can no longer support life.  No treatment.  No cure.

Meh, my mom got that, it was immediately treated, she's fine, and now we just make fun of her.

Basically everything ever mentioned on house, because apparently there's only one dude in the whole world who could figure it out before I would die, and he's not real.

Being patient zero for a worldwide Ebola pandemic is number 3 on my list of ways to die.

I seriously just greeted my mom with "ass cancer" pretty much the whole time she was in recovery. Humor, it's how we deal.

I've met people with lupus and there's a secret part of me that assumes they're faking it or they've been gravely misdiagnosed.

Yeah, but with Ebola your insides liquefy into soup and that'd put me in a pretty HIV negative mood. That and the dudes in the biohazard suits waiting for me to croak so they could make me Ebolash.  I'll take some AIDS thx.   Sans Jimmy Buffet though.

I've had patients who's GI tract backed up into their mouths.  They had poop in their stomach, then vomited, then aspirated on the stomach-poop, then got pneumonia from the bacteria in their lungs.

Alzheimer's.

It doesn't outright kill you - it just destroys your mind.

Also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.  It is what afflicts Professor Steven Hawking.

That brain-eating amoeba, Naegleria fowleri, that 2 poeple got recently from irrigating their nasal passages with those neti pots without the recommended sterile or distilled water sounds nasty.

At a 98% fatality rate, it makes Ebola look like a wimp at 90%.  And of course it was used in House as well.

Insomnia ... doesn't everyone in the MM forums have that???

If not to begin with, as a result!

I agree, VERY unpleasant to suffer with, and live with.
I have multiple sleep disorders....

It's no beauty pill.

Agree, MS is awful – my husband has MS – he has been in remission for more than 15 years now – he was once wheelchair bound, he walks well now but does have bad days when he uses a cane,

But MS’s big brother Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, aka ALS is far worse.

MS basically attacks the voluntary nervous system; your arms, your legs and whatnot. MS is usually not fatal in of itself.

ALS not only attacks the voluntary nervous system but also the involuntary nervous system too. It also attacks the diaphragm (for breathing), the heart, the digestive system and the brain.
ALS is eventually fatal.

Think Stephen Hawking – he has ALS – can you imagine what he would have been capable of if ALS had not entered his life.

ALS has left this great mind in an inoperable shell, only able to communicate with the blink of one eye.

I choose Ebola.

Blood from every orifice isn't pretty. Or fun.

That would be a horrid way to go. Or hemorrhagic fever which is similar I think.

I'm so sorry to hear that, I am glad that he is free from the wheelchair now. One of my close friends has it, she has good days and very bad days sad
Both would be so heartbreaking to have sad

I'm actually studying Stephen Hawking at the moment and his AAC system of communication. It is amazing that we can make these systems and that they can use eye point and other methods of communication. If there's at least a positive it is that these systems are helping these people communicate. There are some really lovely ones for children coming out with more realistic voices and faster voice rates as well smile

That is my affliction also!  It's awful not being able to fall asleep.  So what do I do?  Hop on to the MM forums and read about other horrible illnesses I could have!  Makes me think that maybe I wont sleep tonight after reading about ass cancer and throwing up shit!  Well I suppose it could be worse, huh?   Insomnia isn't fatal ... right?

Pity the OP didn't include parasites. There's a few awful ones that exist.

There's that one in Africa where you can see it running under your skin. That would be kind of bad too, and plenty http://assets.modelmayhem.com/images/smilies/scary.png.

Kuru.  Similar to mad cow disease, but afflicting humans.  All the fun of ALS plus it rots your brain too.  Also called the "laughing sickness" because victims break into spontaneous bouts of helpless laughter in later stages.

To kick the horror up a notch, Kuru is transmitted via ritual cannibalism in which the brain is eaten.

That was used as a subject source in the game Dead Island. It's explained that the infected started with Kuru virus which mutated into something else, I think with human help and the whole island became infected with the walking dead in what seems like hours

Lepracy or flesh eating virus freaks me out. Also anything really contagious that would make you paranoid about going outside and breathing air lol.

Ebola and similars ... for the horrible death, fast but extremely painful.
Terminal diseases in an advanced state where Countries do not allow euthanasia.
A.I.D.S.: both for the disease as such the possibility of contagion others during sex or for blood.
Genetic diseases that involve the death during a certain time as the example made from the OP and similar.

None of the above.

An excerpt from some poetry I wrote years ago.
~life's twists at times seem not fair, that a mortal's mind may melt into air.
