I've seen a lot of posts about "What can I do to make my stomach not so bloaty for my shoots?" ... so I thought I'd compile a list of everything I've personally experienced or heard/seen from others so far that made our stomachs bloaty smile

1. Food babies can cause bloating. Eat lightly and every 1-2 hours rather than gorging all at once to keep your tummy level.

2. High sodium. Having a high sodium diet can make your body retain more water. Water retention = bloat!

3. Various birth control pills. Although birth control pills are not guaranteed to cause bloating (pills react differently with different people), some certainly can. Talk to your doctor if you feel your birth control is causing you to bloat.

4. Fiber pills. They actually have a side effect of bloating depending on which fiber pills you take! I personally experienced the worst bloating in my life when I took fiber pills. I highly recommend going the natural route and changing your diet to get more of your daily fiber requirement than popping medication for it.

5. Carbonated drinks. Carbonation = gas = can cause bloating.

... that's all I can think of so far. Do you guys have any potential causes for bloating to add? smile

How to Help Prevent or Stop Bloating

Try Beano: Oz says this product can help in the battle of the bloat.

"Beano has changed my life," he said. "It digests [the sugar] that is in a lot of these products."

Avoid Artificial Sweeteners: In addition to soda, there may be artificial sweeteners in foods you don't expect, such as yogurts or reduced-calorie foods.

Seek Out Gluten-Free Foods: If gluten is troublesome for you, Oz said to seek out "gluten-free products that are readily available in every major store -- there is even gluten in ice cream."

Look for Dairy-Free Products or Those Containing Lactase: There are a wide variety of foods in grocery stores made from soy products or rice products.

"They are made of products that don't have lactose in them," Oz said.

Over-the-Counter Products: Oz recommends products that have simethicone, an active ingredient in medications such as Gas-X and Mylanta.

These products "will dissolve [gas bubbles] pretty quickly," he said. "It's wonderful for us for many reasons."

Bloating Can Be a Symptom of Another Problem

Oz says bloating can be a symptom of more serious health conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease and even ovarian cancer. If you're concerned, or if your bloating isn't getting better, always check with your doctor.

Caffeine and alcohol are oft overlooked causes of bloating (though you will have to pry my caffeine from my dead, bloated hands to make me give it up).

Wow, that surprises me. I never thought caffeine could do it. Maybe me sticking with 5 Hour Energy over coffee was a good choice after all >___>

I know a lot of gassy vegetarians too, especially the broccoli eating ones.  Okay.  The banana eating ones too.

Some vegetarians here spend far too much time dusting off the sidewalks.  The CARB (California Air Resources Board) should be writing citations on some of them.

Caffeine is actually a bowel stimulant and encourages the gut's peristalsis, and a lot of it is somewhat like a laxative.  Some of the Hollywood crowd run to those coffee enema cleansing things like some sort of health resort.

Carbonated anything can cause bloat.

I rarely bloat from water retention. For me, bloating is gas piling up in the lower part of my belly. Very annoying, and making it painful to suck in my stomach. Unfortunately, I have no idea what causes it, it's completely random sad

I second the wheat and dairy! Stay awaaaaay. Antibiotics, too. Probiotics help me and I try to eat stuff like hummus/chips, nuts, and fruit all day when I'm at a shoot. And green shakes, haha. That seems to give me easily digestible and balanced energy without the sugar spikes, but I definitely have to eat every freaking hour.

Undiagnosed food intolerances or GERD (Gastro esophageal reflux disease)

I now know I have had a lifelong severe intolerance to all members of the onion family (so that's garlic too!)

If I eat even a tablespoon of ketchup (they have garlic and/or onion powder in them) I look like I've been inflated with a bicycle pump pelvis to sternum!!!

So as a result I have developed chronic GERD. I now react with bloating to caffeine, carbonation, chocolate, alcohol, tomato, onion family, peanuts, bell peppers, cheese...

If you have unexplained or rapid bloating after eating consider investigating it smile

I'm always worried about fruits because it gives me a weird acid reflux sad Do you experience this at all?

***Refined sugar, carbonated beverages, salty foods, dairy, excessive protein & fat (large steaks, burgers, etc), or any sudden and unusual change to my diet all cause bloating.

To avoid bloating before/during shoots I do the following:

1. Avoid all of the above items & any heavy meals for 48 hours prior to shooting.

2. Start drinking plenty of hot lemon water & green tea 24 hours prior (hydrates & cleanses).

3. Drink 8 oz. of Kefir probiotic  http://www.lifeway.net/ the morning of the shoot.  Kefir has natural enzymes/good bacteria that help digest sugars and eat bad bacteria in the gut. This helps eliminate any gas that may be present. Must be taken on an empty stomach, no food for at least an hour before/after drinking.

4. Eat a banana or other small piece of fruit, and drink one of these http://guayaki.com/product/341/Lemon-Or … ck%29.html (for energy + the caffeine helps eliminate any last minute water weight) 2 hours before shooting.

5. Sip water throughout the shoot, and avoid eating anything else until after the shoot is over.

My tummy is super-flat for shoots whenever I stick to the above steps. If the shoot is really long, and I start getting low blood sugar, I'll eat half of an oatmeal raisin walnut Cliff bar, or a small piece of fruit, or some baby carrots.  smile

To be fair, I do double check any claim they make with my own physician before following it if I ever have any plans to... so I guess while I listen, I don't just blindly follow smile

I have in the past when I was on medication containing codeine. Blocks things up really, really quickly o.o

I recommend talking to a doctor ASAP if I were you. I am regular now that I eat right, drink lots of water, and exercise properly... but I don't want to just recommend that to you and ignore any potential problems that may exist in your system. Get yourself checked! Better safe than sorry smile

Yes, any time I'm under a lot of stress, dehydrated, or forced to eat foods that are not a part of my normal routine (dairy, high fat, little fiber, etc).

Drinking a 20+ oz bottle of water spiked with lemon, then going for a brisk 30 minute walk usually does the trick (stimulates bowels).

If that doesn't work, you can try an herbal laxative tea with Senna http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod. … matchtype= (usually very safe, but not to be used regularly).

If you're constipated on a weekly basis, and find that water, fiber, and exercise aren't enough, definitely consult your doc.
