Practicing some poses in front of my full length mirror, I always end up cursing my short stub of a torso. It makes many poses look terrible, and makes my midsection look downright chunky, not being able to s-curvy as smoothly/as much. Gah! I've been trying to see what angle variations I can make in my newer poses to make it look longer, not much is working... Help please!!
honestly, I don't see anything wrong with your torso. There are a couple of poses that elongate (basically anything where you put your arms over your head), but if you try to hard to hide something, sometimes you end up emphasising it (you know how sometimes short models have a lot of pictures shot from a low standpoint? kind of like that)
people with long torsos are going "damn my long torso, anyone got any tips to elongate my shorter legs?"
I wouldn't say I have a particularly long torso, nor am I tall but I've been able to get around it a couple ways.
1. Make sure to always extend your neck, it gives a lengthening effect to everything.
2. When I'm in a pose and it feels "right" I always take an extra second to try to pull all my muscles upwards, like pretending there is a string attached to your head pulling you upwards.
3. If you work out just a little bit to give yourself the tiniest bit of muscle definition through your abs it will look better.
4. Always arch your back
Hope at least one of those helps you out. I guess the last thing would be just knowing what styles of clothing look good on your body, if there are certain styles that make your torso look longer or accentuate other parts of your body taking the focus off the torso don't be afraid to wear those styles more frequently than you do others.
Arch your back, and pull your belly button in towards your spine.
I actually learned the second one from yoga, but it really helps in modeling to make your stomach look flatter.
I have a short torso too, I know your pain.
Your torso looks miles long! I don't think it is particularly short at all, though this IS coming from a 5'0'' girl, so...
Some tricks I learned have already been mentioned by others in the thread, though forcing myself to tip toe even when my feet will not be shown has always tensed my muscles and resulted in the shots that make many photographers question my true height. That, plus elongating the neck and raising the arms, seems to work for a shortie like me.
I'm right there with you, girl! I also suffer from a short torso. When I gain weight, it goes straight to my waist because there isn't anywhere else for it to go. When on tour, I have to watch my weight or risk developing a box-shaped, curve-less figure.
When I pose, I always throw my shoulders back and arch my back. That helps to smooth out any stomach wrinkles and lengthen my torso. Cocking my hips to one side creates the illusion of curves, which can also make your torso look longer.
From one short-torsoed model to the next, I hope my advice helps.
besides posing, try to wear things with vertical stripes for your torso, it gives the natural illusion that you're taller/skinnier than usual
As for posing,
Always try to get your back straight. Put your arms over your head, it'll give the feelings of 'light' and will make you naturally look taller
You can also play with different camera angles to get different results
I looked at your port and I totally see what you mean. But at least your legs are not short. Maybe play on your strengths and take the focus off of the parts of your body that make you self conscious. What do your photographers say? Are they happy with your torso?
