The Money Matter - From a Newbie
Hey guys, so I'm really new to the whole photography scene, was just handed a camera last year and told to have fun with it. I've been trying to find some work as I've gotten a bit better than your average person with a DSLR, but I keep coming across the situations where: A: Photoshoot happens with Models for a company but Photographers have to pay to go to the shoot. B: Models want to be payed. I'm not really sure, but most photography studios I know GET paid to take pictures of models, not the reverse. Albeit, they're more of Family Photography type studios. I'm guessing it would have to be like Photographer pays for Model, then sells pictures to certain types of companies to use? Can anyone clarify? May 03 13 06:12 pm Link A doesn't make sense, if a legit company is having a photoshoot for something then they commission a photographer. Sounds more like a group shoot or event, nothing worng with that to build your book. As far as photographers getting paid, yes we do. The question is paid for what? Do you have a portfolio showing what you can do? If not then you need one and rest assured it costs money at first. Many of us went to school to learn, it cost money and that didn't cover our projects - those cost us more. Even if we found another student to be our subject we had at least film costs. So it's far better these day really. In the end if you can't or won't invested in your career and work, how can you expect anyone else to? May 03 13 06:30 pm Link Think of it like Fishing... There are those that get paid to fish, they are fisherman, they go out, catch fish, then sell them. Then there are those that pay for the hobby on the cheap, they buy a few poles, lake fees, drink beer catch a few and enjoy a meal every once in awhile. Then you have the fancy fishermen who spend thousands on custom gear and shiny gadgets, and own their own boats, they might have a sponsorship and cover a few costs. Doing TF shoots and group shoots are a good way to increase your book early on. I still enjoy the occassional TF shoot, but if you want to make it as a full time photographer you'll need to eventually get paid. Best of luck! May 04 13 08:25 am Link Dean Collins, great photographer and teacher, used to say you need two things to be a professional photographer...a camera and a business card. We know you have one, assume you have the other (and of course you can always borrow a camera). Do you have a solid plan of what you want to do. Do your skills and portfolio support the plan. If not make it so. On MM you have three types of people , those who want to be but do nothing to accomplish anything, people who will take the right offer at the right time..maybe, and those that want to succeed (whatever that is to them). You need to make yourself and your offer attractive to models that really want to work and you want them to be people you can learn from (successful models). Sometimes it pays off to partner with MUA in your area. If what you are doing is not getting the results you want figure out why and change things until they do. Good luck.
