These systems are getting more deeply integrated with social capabilities. Its like inviting guests to your living room. I still remember my Atari 2600 in the dawn of the 80's with blocky images and bits of sound.

As soon as I got the email from amazon I went ahead and pre-ordered mine.  Will pre-order the Xbox one too when it is announced.

I don't see why people fight over the consoles.  I prefer the PlayStation because of some of the exclusives but more of my friends have an Xbox so I have that too, to play Battlefield with them.

Why? Because PS4 is $399, $499, and $599?

I went to preorder an Xbox One at Gamestop...they were out.  But I could get a PS4 pre-order.

That doesn't really mean anything though.  Maybe that store was only allocated 5 Xbox Ones and 50 PS4s.

I went on-line and pre-ordered it.

edit: I can't even find a $499 or $599 PS4...any ideas of what you're suppose to get?  Those are the 3 price points they showed at the Keynote.

edit: I must have been drinking...I can't find where they said those three price points...only the $399...ha!

And regardless...for me, it's about the games.  Which system has the game(s) I want.  No Halo on PS4.  That's my goto game right now.

CoD, Battlefield, NCAA Football, Bungie's Destiny are on both platforms.

Unless Microsoft can get rid of their ridiculous online checks and preowned games restrictions (which they are letting companies take the blame for if they choose to use it [not sure if any will])...

If the policy is a fail, it'll be dumped.  But I believe this is going to have little impact on the vast majority of gamers.  Seriously...the on-line checks? who here is regularly disconnecting their system from the internet?  How often are we disconnected from the internet long enough to impact "off-line" gaming?

People are naturally resistant to change when it has potential impact on their comfort zone.

The preowned restrictions is really not an issue.  You can still buy and sell games. They've added a hoop that doesn't impact us but will impact places like Gamestop as they'll have to share their profits with the publishers.  I am curious about how private sales will work and that is a concern of mine.  We should not be required to involve middlemen.

Again...if this fails, the policy will be dropped.

if it works...guess what?  Sony will get in-line.

My boyfriend laughs at me and my gaming. He owns an Xbox 360, PS3 and a very advanced gaming-specific PC and laptop. He's a huge gamer. I own a 3DS, PS2, and an average gaming laptop. I'm sticking to my  PS2 until I hear a solid confirmation that ALL ps2 games are on the network. Until then, I'll happily keep playing my samurai warriors, soul calibur, vice city, and okami smile dance dance revolution is also fun.

xbone has to be online at least once every 24 hours

if it isn't, it becomes a brick and you can't play any games

... that's my point. You can't just "dump" the policy. It's built into the hardware. You'd have to dump the actual bits of the Xbox One.

Also, a TON of people play only offline. I used to work in retail in Ohio. Trust me, a ton of people do not keep crap plugged in.

Lastly, this isn't the last of the crap policies tied to the Xbox One. Wait and see for more press releases. I'm not going to discuss that one online.

(Oh, and Xbox One being restricted from use in certain countries is a great bonus for them, right? Really won't impact their sales. Nope.)

i laughed so hard when i saw the xbone won't be available in japan...that's just absolutely insane, i know the 360 didn't sell well over there but that's one of the biggest gaming cultures in the world and you're just going to ignore them?

Well...I don't know about the PS3 and perhaps you're not all that familiar with the Xbox360.  The Xbox360 has been, during its life, about 3 different consoles.  It's very very very very different from what it was one day.  Not even remotely close today as it was in 2005.  It's NOT the hardware.  They can undo everything in a single system update.

I guess you can go tell my friends who work with/for Microsoft that they are kidding themselves then about these "features."

Seriously though, I do like how changing the dashboard for the 360 somehow equates to what kind of changes would be required for the Xbox One. If Microsoft wants to truly fix this, they're going to have to do it before it ships (it would be easiest than trying to send out updates), and there would be a lot to do.

Regardless of ability, Microsoft has released official statements saying they WILL NOT BE changing it. If you follow their posts, they have been defending their stance the entire way as opposed to considering there may be actual flaws with this new set of policies. In fact, they told the military if they are deployed in a country that has been banned from being able to play the Xbox One, for example, they can play the 360.
( http://www.extremetech.com/gaming/15827 … e-xbox-360 )

Microsoft is, to all appearances, making the same mistake. In an interview with GameTrailer, Don Mattrick, President of Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment division, said: “Fortunately we have a product for people who aren’t able to get some form of connectivity, it’s called Xbox 360. If you have zero access to internet, that is an offline device.” He then independently raised the issue of whether or not Microsoft would support soldiers on deployment with the Xbox One — and stated that they wouldn’t. “I’ve got to imagine that it’s not easy to get an internet connection. Hey, I can empathize. If I was on a sub, I’d be disappointed.”

If you’re an American soldier, Microsoft empathizes. Sony, meanwhile, will happily sell you a PS4. This isn’t a misquote; in a separate interview with Destructoid, when asked what players without internet connectivity should do, Phil Spencer, Microsoft’s corporate VP, stated “The 360 ecosystem is a great ecosystem for somebody that’s in a purely disconnected state for long periods of time. We have built a natively connected device with Xbox One and we think the experiences are moving in that direction.”

So yeah, Sony wins. No every 24 hour online checks, no DRM bullcrap, no cutting out countries (the entirety of Asian can't play the Xbox One till late 2014 - much of South America, Europe, and the entirety of Africa are cut out with no word about being let in), PS4 is region free - same as PS3, Sony's nextgen is cheaper in both starting price and online play fees, and Sony still has a pretty decent game lineup.

Edit: To note, I was a huge Microsoft fan. I have the 360 and have been playing it for many years. That doesn't mean I support this new development though. I find this very unwise and alienating to many players. The sports/tv focus also sucks - it's as schizophrenic as Windows 8 (with its mobile UI for desktop users and Windows desktop for tablet users).

I've never really been into the PS systems or Sony as a whole, but if I ever buy a console for this generation (I have a custom built PC, so I'm not really that interested in consoles at all right now), I'm going Sony. Trust me when I say I never thought I'd see the day where those words came out of my mouth.

Though the console is region free, Sony has state that it is still up to the publishers of the games to determine whether or not they will implement DRM on their games.

Granted there have been those that have implement this such as Ubisoft, and received backlash for it and have learned that DRM such as the online connectivity does not work very well in stopping hacking and piracy.  It punishes those that pay for the game, and rewards those that don't.

http://www.afterdawn.com/news/article.c … e_with_ps3

When the whole online gaming came about, Microsoft had a paid subscription service that was implemented.  By having it, they went about banning people who had modded their systems, pirated games, and what not.  They decided that going after those individuals was not worth their time in courts after many losses and issues.

Microsofts paid online service also had rewards available to the gamers.  The gaming experience has been considered more enjoyable because Microsoft cared about what was going on in their online community.

Sony on the otherhand chose the opposite.  They decided to go viciously after the modders, hackers, and pirates in courts.  Take the PS3 Modder guy.  They went through tooth and nail.  The end result was that the guy didn't do jail time so long as he ceased and desist his copyright circumvention of the system(judge found him not guilty); which he gave in(Sonys' offer to him).  Sony took a big slap in the face for not winning the suit, but in the end they stopped the guy from continuing his acts.

Also, Sony did not charge for their online game services in order to gain on the marketshare of online gamers.  Okay, fine they won some over, but many gamers felt cheated by the cheaters, and Sony did very little to nothing to stop them.  They then decided to have a paid service later on.

Few steps later, the online accounts of Sony was breached.  Big slap in their face.  They were too proud of their security to think no one would hack them.  Yeah great articles about that and how they reacted.

Sony has stepped on the people that have made them who they are.  So having all this stuff is a step in the right direction, but not enough to convince me to buy into any of their products.

Though I have pretty much stopped gaming after the PS1, due to my inability to coordinate with camera view while being on the move, I still own the original xbox and Ps2.

The only reason for me to consider purchasing the PS4 is simply for two things.  Entertainment for my roomie and bro when they are around, and as another optical source medium to have that I don't already.  I don't even own a blue ray player.

I've never been a fan of either Sony or Microsoft.  But yes, I would like to see to Microsoft go down the crapper this time.  And I don't think that having this online connectivity issue is going to stop the consumers from buying this.

I'm not arguing Sony is good, Gryph. I'm simply arguing it's better than Microsoft in this coming generation.

And I'm sure some people will still buy Microsoft, but there are MAAAANY people who have chosen not to - myself included (and I was a Microsoft fangirl for the entirety of the 360). This is a conversation I've had with many gamers - and a lot of them were equally as Microsoft fans as myself.

I don't believe Microsoft will crash and burn. I don't believe Microsoft will have some huge financial issue. I do, however, believe far less people will be buying the Xbox One than they may have originally predicted.

All things said here I couldn't agree with you more.

The reason for my post was simply to clarify a few things that were left out; though I don't believe it was intentional.

Though Sony may win this gen console war, I suspect the old skeletons in their closet will resurface and bite back the customers.

PS3, dual boot Linux - oh wait, though we gave that option to you, we shall take it back. lol

Looks like M$ is doing more damage to themselves.  lol
