You're not the first and you won't be the last.

When you recieve their check (and it won't be in the mail), shred it and have no further communication.

Actually, if people want to help dissuade this kind of scam, give them a fake address/information.
It wastes their time, and while not a lot of money, some money in causing them to mail out checks they can never follow up on.
If they contact you, string them along. It's the only way. When it becomes more hassle than profit, then they stop.

What I find strange is that a first time poster posts this letter... with a non-specific thread header... and within a few follow up posts... four first time posters respond as well...

Not reading too much into it... but it strikes me as rather strange and unusual... hmm

This to me doesn't look like someone asking if this is a scam.
This looks like the Nigerian scammer is directly posting on MM.

Scam? Yes. Much good advice here so far. Think. Use a little common sense and it will come to you.

Incorrect. The best thing you can do is take it to your local Postmaster. This is mail fraud and is illegal.

This is a typical Nigerian scam letter.
They don't use the USPS.  It's done by email and another carrier such as Fed Ex or UPS so that it doesn't have anything to to with the US Postal Service, therefore they won't, and CAN'T get involved.

There are literally millions of emails like this sent every day.  Yeah, you can take it to the FBI or other law enforcement agency however the chances of anyone taking action on it is equivalent to being able to make ice by boiling water.

If it does not come by USPS, you can take the check to your local FBI office. The FBI has made several arrests over the years in these types of scams.

This is a numbers game to the FBI. If one person reports one scam, the FBI may place a lower priority on the case. However, if everyone that's been scammed from MM reported the scam, something might actually be done to stop it.

Let the FBI do their jobs smile

If each of you received the message here on MM, then all of you should immediately CLICK HERE and report the matter to the mods.  They will investigate and will either close the offending profiles or take other action if they indeed, turn out to be scammers.  When you get these kinds of messages, don't hesitate to "Contact a Mod" by clicking the link I just gave you or from the "Help" menu in the top bar.  By letting the mods know they can stop others from getting hit with the same scam.

What I saw:

Blah, blah, blah...

The total pay for the jobs is $2500 but you will get an upfront payment of $500 plus the wardrobe fee which you will send to the wardrobe manager to get you stuffs that you will use for the shooting...

Blah, blah, blah...

So, they send you a check for $2,500 and expect you to forward $2,000 of it to a wardrobe person.  They hope you send the $2,000 off before you realize that their $2,500 check bounces.  Ask yourself -- why on earth are they giving you the wardrobe fee?

Let's be real -- given your experience, do you really expect to land such a lucrative contract without an interview?

Ever notice the English in these things?  You can hear the accent in the writing.  Coupled with poor grammar and punctuation.  What professional would send out such tripe?

I got this also! They said the same thing to me only on the 28th of December. Got the  check for $1000 (Even though the email said a $500 up front for good faith and wardrobe fees),which they told me 250 is mine and the rest is to be sent as a money gram to wardrobe (that is what i dont get about this is the 250 for myself thing),tried to cash the check and american express said it was fake and so did chase. I have been trying to call and text the organizer but to no avail.

It's unfortunate that you fell for this very common scam. Report the phone number to the police and move on.

Read up on the internet about common scams and try and avoid them in the future.

The sad thing is your details are now on a "suckers list" and will be shared amongst the scammers. Maybe consider changing your email and cell phone to new ones.

Learn and move on...

I always put my full trust and faith into illiterate strangers who approach me on the internet.

Why the last time I won the Nigerian Lottery, I sent them so many of my personal details, it would be next to impossible for them confuse me with anyone else.

I'm so lucky that I've won it six times already, man it's gonna be easy street for me when all those checks come rolling in!

Some advice/info from a former federal prosecutor.

Be wary of...

Any unsolicited opportunities
Any communication seeking your personal identifying information
Any communication seeking your bank account info or credit/debit card info
Any deal requiring you to deposit funds then forward all/part of the funds to someone else.
Any deal asking to use your bank account because they somehow don't have access to one.

The Nigerian scams come in a wide variety of different forms. They are sometimes called 419 schemes, after a section of the Nigerian penal code. Believe it or not, the US Secret Service has been the central federal law enforcement agency for these scams, although the Postal Inspectors and FBI also have jurisdiction over mail fraud.

Two things to be mindful of...
You can report an email, but the probability is that nothing is going to done unless someone has actually lost money, and the US Attorneys usually won't prosecute a fraud case unless the total losses are at least $100,000.
Second, these scams can sometimes turn ugly. There have been cases where the victim is invited to travel to Lagos to finalize the deal. Once there they are taken hostage and held for ransom, or worse.

You can find some good info on this scam and others at the FBI's website.

This is a well-known (and presumably successful) scam practiced by thousands of people all over the world.  There is no way that all of the scammers could be caught, and even if they were, there would be other scammers to take their place.

The best way to stop the scammers is to stop people falling for the scams.  Unfortunately, the scams works because people are always willing to fall for them, despite all the warnings on this site and on the internet in general.

+1

These fraudsters prey on the victim's...
Greed - let us use your bank account to transfer $30 million, you may keep one third of the money
Conceit - you have the modeling look we need, please provide your bank info
Altruism - my daughter is dying from cancer, can I use your bank account to pay for her treatment
etcetera... etcetera... etcetera
