I am looking at the work by Jan Banning and trying to understand how he color processed this image

Would you select each part of the image and work on it separately with curves etc, or can this be achieve by effecting the image globally?

Here is my sample that I am trying to get a similar-ish look

I assume the color you're after is more red/magenta in the skin tones? There aren't many other colors in your image to edit.

If you use selective color and work in the reds and yellows, you can work globally (which is what I did here). If you use curves or color balance, I would mask out the parts I didn't want to change.

1. Duplicate image to new layer.
2. On top layer, run the GIMP G'MIC Freaky Details filter.
3. Set top layer to Saturation mode at 90% opacity.
4. Optionally, do some light masking on the eyes so that the redness isn't amplified.

Not quite the same look/processing, but Pictus did this one for me.  I have it on my studio wall.
