Seems that Australia has been tripping over my desk recently, and I wonder whether US Conservatives (well, Republicans) hate Australia as a counter-example. Here's some examples:
Conservatives want some kind of voter ID system to prevent a non-existent voter fraud problem, hoping that fewer poor & minority voters won't be able to vote. Australia has a mandatory voting system, where register voters who don't vote are fined. Australia has better voter turnout than the US.
The Aussie's election campaigns last about a month -- ours are getting started now, 3 years before the election, costing billions of dollars of wasted money.
Conservatives resist efforts to raise the minimum wage. Australia's minimum wage is nearly twice that of the US and Australia has lower unemployment.
Conservatives violently resist any notion of gun control. Australia has more gun control than the US and has lower gun related crime rates.
Australia has a comprehensive national health care system costing considerably less than the US healthcare system, yet conservatives try to repeal "Obamacare" every other week.
To the folks who are tempted to tell me "Why don't you move to Australia?", I'll say, why can't the US learn to be better than Australia?
Conservatives hate Nikon.
