What do you feel is a good amount of images for a portfolio here on MM?

When you see a photographer or other model's port, at what point do you think it's too much?

I'm debating on expanding to 75 images but will probably only use ~30, wanted to get some thoughts first smile

Ideal size is the number of REALLY good images you have. Probably 10 to 15 will let the world know whether you are talented.

Ansel Adams could post one image and have the world swooning.

But just one very worthless opinion.   smile

20 to 30 is enough to demonstrate your skills, but if your goal is to group 60 photos in 10 different genres then you need to upgrade.

Great question!

I'd say that for photographers something between 30-60 images is fine.

I used to have closer to 200 images posted and took them down. I was using the site more as an image hosting site but changed my philosophy about that. I had a nice collection of images and it was tough to choose what to delete but I felt it was overkill.

I've seen some people break their work up into various albums; the main port is a varied representation if their work and then specific genres in albums. Although I think it is a good idea if you want lots of images posted I really hate viewing albums on this site because it is a cumbersome process.

I think most models have less - between 15 and 30, but I feel this is often too little.

I think 15 can effectively display your skill, but that's just my opinion. It depends on the image you are going for and how many genres you wan to display.

Who is your target audience?  Maybe that should drive the equation...  in my humble estimation...

At the upper reaches of the industry books are seldom over twenty images... Page layout matters... as does the flow of the presentation... and latent narratives contained within... does the aggregate have a strong consistent visual statement?  most importantly does your work speak to your clients needs...

Have you tested & verified on various platforms... i.e. iPads which have now become ubiquitous for showcasing to AD's etc.

However if you're marketing to Mayhem hobbyist...

I would not show an AD an iPad if my work is destined for a printed format, it just doesn't make sense.  Also agency access does a survey every year about this and other issue related photographers.  A large percent didn't like digital portfolios and some didn't mind it.

That tells me there is a risk with digital but a real printed book is always acceptable.

Back to the OP question, Thomas is correct - you don't need a lot of images to show your work and more is simply more for the sake of it.  Keep it to 10-20 of your best work

Quantity does not equal quality. It's better to have 10 strong images then to have 60 so so images. For a particular category of images (i.e head shots, kids, nudes, etc) 15-20 is fine.
