Or people that have met one, or had one.

I've never had one or met one. It's not like they have a sign on them saying "hey I'm a nympho come fuck me"

Being a nymphomaniac requires you to buy into the idea that there's something wrong with you (addiction, compulsive or impulsive disorder, or hypersexuality as the side effect of another illness or drug) for wanting to have lots of sex. If there's nothing wrong with you, nymphomania/hypersexuality criteria hinges on cultural expectations, which are not universal.

I want sex a whole fucking lot, but I wouldn't call it a mania.

Hey I didn't expect any well worded replies. The OP was intended to be "funny/quirky" and wasn't intended as being serious.

I think the movies and TV have created this expectation that you can find these kind of people all over the place.  I mean it's not like you can meet a woman on the street and figure out she's a nymphomaniac just by a minute of random conversation now could you? But the whole movie / TV industry have created that illusion that you can.

I agree with your thoughts. But the DSM has it listed as an illness.

I know it was a silly thread.

Bdsm was in the dsm until fairly recently, now it's not /shrug

I certainly believe that hypersexuality exists for some, (addiction, compulsive, impulsive, side-effect, etc.) but in the context that they literally cannot control themselves and/or are using sex as a mechanism for coping or something, and generally if it makes them uncomfortable/unhappy.

I take issue with the idea of hypersexuality in any other context though in the sense that the only way we can judge what a "normal amount of sexual desire" is, is by polling people who may or may not be honest because of their societal conditioning and fears of being "a slut" or a "sex addict", and comparing someone to those answers. One persons "hyper" sexuality is just someone else's empowerment.

As for what the media portrays...I can't say that I've been given the impression you have, but we may be looking at different things. Either way, welcome to the media projecting unrealistic things.

We must get different TV content in the northern hemisphere.

If within that minute she pulls your pecker out, figure you've probably found one.
