As a make up artist I wear my nails short and clean. A very basic look. But I have seen make up artists (especially online) with outrageous nails. Although they look great with designs, I wonder if it would bother clients (especially work around the eyes). Does this matter to you or have you experienced anything like this?

I keep my nails short and clean when doing makeup. I will be honest it just looks more professional. I would be afraid someone would poke my eye out with those claws.

Yes definitely short nails as far as designs and such I don't believe it to matter as long as it doesn't get in the way of you doing you job.

I definitely wouldn't want to do long fake nails, but I don't see any problem with some color as long as it's not chipped.

Short and clean, with polish unless I'm doing FX.

I cringe whenever I see someone with long nails doing someone else's makeup. Long nails can be a brewing place for bacteria not to mention the fact that it's a bit scary. Yes...I'm sure someone will speak up and say that they always sanitize their hands, but unless you're in the bathroom with a nail brush scrubbing under there....hand sanitizer can only do so much.

Short, clean, and filed nails are best in my opinion. As a client, I feel safer and as if the application is cleaner. Long nails, as someone said earlier are excellent places for bacteria.

I have had a MUA work on me with long acrylics. They were gorgeous, though long enough that they reminded me of eagle talons. Regardless, I did end up needing to help her open makeup containers. I didn't necessarily mind, but found it peculiar.

I have also had very UNmanicured hands on my face, making me cringe when she wasn't looking.

I don't care what they look like, just make them neat and clean and don't run your long nails through the brush hairs. Ew.

I  think nails should look done, doesn't matter the color and a decent sized length. Also, if doing bridal & the wedding photographer does 'getting ready' shots, you want your nails to look their best... definitely not chipped or like you haven't gotten them done in a while.

I always keep mine short, but I wear fake nails. I do a lot of hair colors so my nails end up stained, plus I love doing nail art on them. I get weird looks when I ask them to cut them extremely short, but it is for this reason.

I am a makeup artist that has had both long nails and short nails. I think its best to keep them short enough that your nails don't touch the clients face when you put the pad of your fingertip on their face. That is just what I have found that works for me working with fashion clients and special occasion clients. No stiletto nails please!!!

Personally, short and clean.

I seldom wear polish and if I do it's clear or sheer nude. However, that's easy for me because it's the way I have ALWAYS preferred to keep my nails.

As long as someone is properly manicured and within reasonable length it should be okay.

I wear gel polish over my natural nails.. i rock funky colours but i keep them clean and sport length.. my clients know me for my crazy coloured nails.. they are not even that crazt often any shade of pink and glitter but its very me wink
I couldnt do make-up with talons.. or huge gems. I think clean filled, and shorter length and polish of any colour is fine..

I prefer short and clean bc it's less upkeep and does look more professional. I don't want to hurt my clients either...

I agree, Gel Polish is fantastic and always looks wonderful. I do enjoy a gel manicure from time to time

I find that if I wear nail polish, it comes off/chips quickly because I sanitize my tools with rubbing alcohol, which dissolves the polish.
Also, gel polish tends to dry out my nails a lot to the point where they are in really bad shape when I remove the polish.
At the same time, I find that gel polish protects my nails from the constant alcohol/washing hands...
Also, when I clean my makeup brushes that tends to wreak havoc on my polish (and dries out my nails) -- even though I am using only extremely gentle, natural cleaners.

I keep my nails short with clear polish.... I don't wear the fake nails anymore but if I did they wouldn't be crazy long.

Short and Clean, always. I would never wear fake nails, not only are they not sanitary but you could very easily poke someone or scratch someone while working. Instagram makeup "gurus" are very seldom professional makeup artists that work throughout the week so they can be more glammed up because they are selling themselves to an audience, whereas I am not.
