This might end up being a long post but i'd greatly appreciate it if you took the time to read it and help a girl out!

I was trying to apply at the Sephora in JCPenney but was having trouble with the website so I called the store and got directed to the Sephora. The manager was very nice and told me that if I was having trouble to go in person and ask someone to help me at the application office in the back where you apply on the computer. She also asked me about any prior experience I might have. I told her I was a free lance makeup artist (self employed) and that I had experience with customers in that area.

So I went the next day to the JCPenney and asked the worker there if the manager was in. She said she was busy doing some shipment orders in the back but directed me to the offices where I could apply. After I applied I went back and the manager still wasn't there so the worker told me to leave my information with her if I would like, so handed her my resume along with my cover letter. She told me that she would let the manager know and that was that.

Two days later I nervously called in, asked for the manager, and asked for the status of my application/resume. She said she hadn't had the chance to review any of them but she did pull out my resume on the spot and asked me about my job history. After that, she asked me what i knew about skin care! I was so nervous I could not remember anything that I knew about skincare. (i know the basics, oily skin should stay away from ointment creams and should look for things with low oil base or to buy things that say noncomedogenic as well as dry skin should look for ingredients like glycerin) anyways i didn't say any of that, i said oily skin types should stay away from oil based things and dry skin should buy moisturizing foundations like maybe BB creams or CC creams (LOL).

Anyways, besides messing up that question completely, she gave the interview for next tuesday! YAY! Now I am so nervous!

My question is, what type of things should I know about skin care?? Are there any other things I should know? Are there any questions i should be aware about? Please help! This is one of my dream jobs and I want this so badly!

It's good to be knowledgeable about products, but I doubt they will ask you more questions about skincare, unless you're be hired for skincare. Sephora prides itself in being a teaching store, so they will teach you everything you need once your get hired.
The best thing for you to do is to:
- Show enthusiasm for makeup, for learning, for teaching, and for newness. For example, this summer is huge for lips (lip balms, melted lipsticks, etc)- let them know that you are aware of trends.
- Show that you are capable of engaging with clients, pursuing clients, adding on products to the basket, etc. They have something called WECARE (welcome, engage, c....., add-on, reassure, encore)- I don't remember exactly what the "c" stand for.
- If you are to be in the "color world", let them know that you are big on teaching tips and tricks while applying makeup to a client.
-Dress neatly in all black and have an adequate amount of makeup on. Normally the employees are supposed to wear foundation, two eyeshadows, a liner, and a lip product.

Hope that helps!

Valeria when I interviewed with Sephoria (primary retail outlet in Reston, VA) skin care was pivotal in the mix... the fact I had trained with estheticians was warmly received... the store manager explained that the lion's share of there revenue stream was in skin care product...

While I truly liked the fact that cast members aren't on commission (but they do get incentives) the manager was actually looking for part time weekend help while being a bridal makeup artist this didn't work for me (I was looking for part time weekday assignments).

Thus we parted ways albeit I still frequent her shop, love the ambiance.  If the pay came anywhere close to bridal I would be a cast member today smile

Best Advice?  Get licensed as an esthetician in Texas...  Especially if you are considering agency representation in your career path... top agencies in my market are requesting this expertise of thier makeup artist...

Have you interviewed with Sephoria recently?  This is an industry forum please do not share hearsay... thank you for your thoughtful consideration here...

All the best on your journey Valeria

What is a cast member?

Is this theatre or retail?

Sephora has 'code' names of sort for everything. 'Stage' is the mail selling floor. The Store Director is the Store Manager. Assistant Director...assistant manager.

You've been provided with superb advice. Study their website, especially the skincare brands that they sell. Be sincere about the fact that you want to learn more about skincare and know what brands you like. Ideally they should be mostly Sephora brands. If you can stop by a Sephora a few days prior to your interview and play with products. I wouldn't recommend going to the one that you'd be interviewing with. Just be passionate and study. You should be fine. Good luck!

Providing info about you retail customer service experience will be paramount toward  selection as a potential canadate from an interview.
Make up experience for an establishment such as Sephora will not really help with their consideration of offering you a position as much as  your ability in providing words  explaining your interest  to work  in make up and for there company. As with all interview's  sell you self and your. Knowledge and interest with working with the company.
Have a look at some dated post that will provide some good insight to the interview process and application questions from a by goner of a time ago.
