Because they need publicity stunts every so often.

I think Archie is already alive again.

The only characters to remain dead are Uncle Ben & Bruce Waynes Parents.

I thought Gwen came back as a clone, as masterminded by the Jackal aka Professor Warren.

I could be wrong. My comic reading was getting pretty sporadic then.

As for Archie, my guess is that Betty and Veronica had both taken out large life insurance policies on him in order to finance their upcoming retirement with ObamaCare.

Why Do They Have To Kill The Main Characters?
Lots of reasons:

...  The creative team that created the character might, over time, get really sick & tired of the character.  Fans of the character don't want the character to grow or change or do anything different, so over time, managing the character can get awfully tedious.  Think about a one-hit wonder musical act -- everywhere they go, the public wants to hear them perform the same darn song over & over thousands of times, and the public prefers the old & familiar to the new & experimental.  Killing off the character can end it all -- think of it as suicide.

...  TV Shows:  When a TV show becomes successful, the main characters want to cash in.  The shows with an ensemble of ~6 characters of equal appeal (e.g. "Friends") become problematic.  Each actor wants absurd amounts of money (like maybe $1,000,000 per episode), and each actor want to get paid as much as the highest paid actor.  Often, the show's payroll exceeds the show's revenue, in which case, someone dies or moves away.

...  "Killing" off a main character can spike people's interest, and folks who used to be fans might come back.  And then, by some miracle, the main character is resurrected.

Let 'em go -- it makes room in our hearts for new characters.
