I know it's slow, OLD glass, but are any of you using it these days ?  Any portrait examples, or macro shots you'd like to share with the rest of us ??  Thanks in advance ~ m'

It's another 'Rockwell Special'. Right when the lens was discontinued our buddy Ken took to the internet about how the 70-180 was the most incredible lens Nikon ever made. It immediately went out of stock everywhere and used prices bolted upwards.

I've never used it. I'm guessing it's a very competant lens from the Film Days of Nikon.

I used to use mine a lot on my D200, but since I bought a D610 I am more likely to use my 135 f2 dc for close head shots. Almost always used in studio and on a tripod. I like the results.

Dennis it isn't micro, doesn't go to 1:1 besides you'll be out of luck trying to get a TC200 to work on it...

Best advice?  In my humble estimation there is likely few other better beauty lens that compare with the 200mm f/4.0D ED micro Nikkor... it is legendary, ubiquitous and has been produced in Japan since 1993... no other Nikkor approaches it in sharpness... Virtually free of Chromatic Aberration and Distortion...

No it doesn't have VR albeit I always shoot it on a massive tripod...
Love it's tripod collar... allows EZ horizontal to vertical orientation....

Possibly Canon's 180mm is it's equal... both are the workhorse of beauty genre...

These captures are with a D3 i.e. the same senor as your D700 Dennis...

btw, the 85mm you used on your Avatar is a fav for fashion... wise choice...

Hope this helps...
All the best on your journey...

I love the 70-180 MICRO.  I use it with close up diopters and extension tubes.  very versatile for close up work.  I also have the 200 micro.  I usually opt for the 70-180 though

shop around.  up to $1k it is a great value for the money.  probably worth a couple hundred more easily.  I just saw one sold for $1050.
