Bárðarbunga volcano erupting   (sub glacial so far)

Last eruption in 1794
Fissure eruptions are also a feature that Bárðarbunga volcano has (picture 15 to 20 miles of lava fountains)

it hasnt actually started to erupt yet,as the magma seems to be moving to a dike away from the calsera, but yeah, this has fissure eruption written all over it and could be a big one.lets pray this one doesn't get as bad as potentially this one cand go...it has had some VEI 6 and at least 1 7 in its history

You better be ready for some global cooling if there's a VEI 6+ eruption!

Seems to be heading twards one of those volcanoes with a name that you run your fingers across your keyboard and add jokul at the end...
To be honest I'd rather it come out there than if the entire dike splits open(like what happened at Laki in 1783...VEI 6... The plume drifted over the UK and france and the gasses killed like 10,000 people there and the ensuing winter was so fucked up that there was ice on Lake Ponchetrain LA

so we kinda don't need a repeat of Laki

Well scientists have figured out how big this can be...as they have guestimated the volume of magma on the move is in the solid VEI 5-6 range depending on how explosive it is....

Not what we wanted to hear

Fissure Eruption Begins In Iceland As Bardarbunga Magma Breaches The Surface
http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2014-08-2 … es-surface

"a fissure eruption has started in the Holuhraun lavafield north of Dyngjujökull. Newly formed crevasses were spotted in surveillance flyovers by scientists yesterday and at that time geophysicist Magnús Tumi Guðmundsson estimated that the magma intrusion which had been monitored for the previous week was moving only 2 kilometres under the surface."

I am almost going to breathe a sigh of relief so far
That is a very small fissure and its a mostly red eruption(liquid lava)

The flooding is a given and was expected

But that is still a huge mass of magma...so there could be more fissures,
Even if most of the magma empties and its 75% red,and the flows are massive enough to reach the sea(like Laki did in 1783)...while a really large eruption volume wise we all could have dodged a really large bullet, especially Iceland(you can escape a lava flow...lots of ash and gasses can kill everything on that island)

As long as it erupts in these lava fields it will be a benign Hawaiian styled red eruption that would be more a tourist attraction than anything else...heck,like I said, let the fissues open to 10 km...and let it flow into the sea,as long as it stays red and somewhat liquid, its kinda harmless

those underwater videos they had from the hawaiian flow eruptions in the last couple decades are really cool to view...i wouldn't want to be filming them, but they're fun to watch. smile

There is a fuckton of magma that wants to come out(if it came out exposively it would be vei 5-6)
This is the perfect spot for it to erupt and just bleed and give the world some cool fountains
The bigger the fissures and eruption gets here the less likely Iit will explode catastrophicly

Deeply buried solid minerals undergoing a change in pressure - for example a pressure reduction because of the eruption - can change state going from solid to liquid and change size in the process.
Water Ice is unusual in that it expands when it freezes. Most things expand when they melt.
The change of state can create a larger volume of magma (compared to the source rock) and continue to power the eruption, even while ignoring the gas content.
