Burnt Wood & Decayed Lace 2008 (title by jeo) (portrait of a friend - Jeni)
Rural North Dakota
Through harder years with dust in her teeth
she stayed stahlwart and firm;
assured she was where she needed to be.
She had accepted his once-tender hands.
She still kissed those hands even if the blood was her own.
As pleased as the dogs were when he came home,
and just as forgiving and loving, moments later, as
alcohol breath smothered her, while pain as fire spread
between her struggling legs.
Angels ablaze cleansed the prairie one hot summer day,
cathartic and knowing.
The men worked into the night to calm the flames,
while she held herself, shivering excitedly.
Secretly smiling, she saw the future brighten as
Orion climbed the sky.
