I will show you how to replace the "no avatar, newb" sign with your own photo.
First, on this same page, scroll up to the black toolbar above, and click on the "my stuff" button.
Then, on the followup page, click on the blue "manage photos" button.
Then, choose just one photo to go on your main profile page. Next to the one photo that you decide to use, click on the "set as avatar" button.
Remember, that you can only choose 1 photo to use as your avatar.
Thats it! That photo is now on your main profile page.
