About Me

Keith S., principal of Silver & Light: Fine Art B&W Photography, brings a deep passion for creating powerful photographs by working not only with conventionally beautiful models, but by expanding concepts of physical beauty beyond people with bodies that are youthful and conventionally near perfect. In particular, Keith believes that we can enhance that definition by seeing older bodies – complete with imperfections and evidence of aging – as beautiful because they have been lived in and have experienced life with all its joys and sorrows. Keith’s goal is to help us reclaim our bodies – to see ourselves in our fullness, to expand our view of beauty to the reality around us, and to appreciate the glory of bodies that have fully lived. While often studio based, Keith also loves to work in nature with available light whenever possible, which brings its own beauties and challenges, especially when shooting nudes.

Keith’s photography is in the long tradition of art seeking beauty in the nude form. It is clear to him that the honesty and vulnerability in appearing naked deeply impacts the experience of creating the images, as well as how they are seen and experienced – both by the person photographed and by others. His current project is Seeing Beauty in All: Over-40 Nudes, which is about creating and showing beautiful black & white images of nude “ordinary” people – women, men and couples – over the age of 40 (although most are in their 50s and 60s). The power of the project is in that simple authenticity of being exposed as human beings, exposed for what we really look like to determine whether there is beauty to be seen.

Keith studied photography while at Oxford University and put himself through law school with wedding photography and black & white portraiture, as well as selling his photographs in art shows and fine restaurants. After many years of shooting in medium format, Keith made the transition to digital in 2009 and now primarily shoots with a Nikon D700 camera system and lenses, and prints with a massive Epson 7900 printer. While his shift to digital greatly enhanced Keith's capabilities, it has not changed his artistic sensibilities, as he is not about significant retouching or “photoshopping.” All of his serious work remains in black & white.
