About Me

I’ve taken an American icon, the T-shirt, and re-envisioned it. T-shirts are worn worldwide, have their origins in utility, were invented in the United States, but are not considered art. I seek to elevate T-shirts to wearable art status without losing the qualities of comfort and informality. I add texture and visual tension through raised seaming. To do this I re-purpose an industrial machine, normally used in the sewing industry to edge fabric, and use it for garment construction. The closely formed stitches create seaming that I call squiggly embroidery, allowing me to transform a construction element, the seam, into a design element. Instead of treating the seams as ugly, to be hidden, I use multiple colored threads and integrate color, texture, and construction, uniting utility and beauty. All garments are original designs and I draft and grade all patterns via a computer pattern drafting program. I have a small production studio in the Northeast Arts district in Minneapolis.
