About Me

Jason Charles Picard is a documentary photographer who sometimes dabbles in conceptual fine art and creative portraiture. He is interested in examining the way that individual experience contrasted with simple basic needs works together to create the endless human complexities. Yet it’s not the differences that he is most interested in; it’s the similarities woven between the complexities that root these experiences in the human condition which intrigues him most.

Life took a dramatic turn for Jason on June 16th, 2006. After having taken a summer job on the edge of the Alaskan wilderness, he went out for a hike after work one day to scout a cliff for rock climbing. Approaching the top from the hill-side behind the cliff, he peeked over the edge and turned around to walk away when the ground suddenly broke loose and he was falling.

Twelve hours before he was found, another three to before getting airlifted to the hospital and finally three surgeries and ten months before he could put the crutches away for good. The recovery gave him plenty of time to think deeply about the direction of his life and about how photography, the hobby he picked up from his Grandfather that was gradually dominating his free learning time, could become a lifestyle for expressing his dialogue.

5 years later, Jason is months away from completing his BFA in photography at the New Hampshire Institute of Art. He has displayed work in multiple group shows at the institute and had well received pieces in auction for charity. Extensive travel has allowed him to document subjects ranging from family farms, lifestyle in a handful of different European countries, and dramatic protest; including protests and riots in Greece from summer 2011 and the fall 2011 events of Occupy Wall Street in New York City. He currently lives in Manchester, New Hampshire and is eager to get back on the road.
