About Me

For examples of newer work, also add me on Instagram @BillyZdan

After spending the last 17 years in Los Angeles and New York City, I'm now in Nashville, TN. I'm primarily a painter, but I have expanded my photography over the recent years and not only use photographs for painting reference, but now also feature and exhibit my photography. As such, some projects for which I might consider working with models might be for reference only...while others may be for exhibition and/or publication.

I've worked with dozens, if not hundreds, of models of varying types, so your look might be perfect for one of my concepts, no matter what you look like. However, I tend to shoot with models who are not the "Playboy" type. No offense if that is your style, but I usually do not have a concept for those looks. I also have a large network of very experienced models and it's likely that you may know someone with whom I've shot if you have been in the business for a while. That helps all of us, because references matter to me...which brings me to:

One thing I can promise for any model interested in working with me is safety. I am not here for romantic opportunities and I am not here to exploit anyone. I am married to a wonderful and beautiful human (who also happens to be a model). Anything that I shoot reflects on me as an artist and any action I take does as well. Expect respect from me and a laid-back, but professional environment.

I am 420 friendly and I like to imbibe, but I'd prefer you sober for the shoot (especially if we haven't met before). If we work together, it is about artistic collaboration and I've found that the best work comes when we are both comfortable and establish trust. I don't pressure anyone to do anything that they don't want to do, but I do like to push the envelope and I will let you know exactly what to expect IN ADVANCE if we plan a shoot. Ask me anything.

People who have worked with me tell me I'm very fun and that it was well worth it to them to work with me. I have also made close friends with several of my models and I will value YOU as a human being who is doing a job and/or collaborating on art.

Rebecca Schoenkopf - Riviera Magazine
"William Zdan’s portraits are hellish: pretty breasts
and faces with scars, covered in gas masks and bees,
all in fiery reds and oranges. But the O.C. artist’s
still lifes are equally as lovely and unsettling as his
pierced, punk women. An oil derrick isn’t just an oil
derrick—it’s man’s phallic incursion into the earth,
withdrawing her oil, drying her up. His skies are
apocalyptic—is that a mushroom cloud, or just a
sunset through smog? Faces crawl with insects, a
less infuriating take on Damien Hirst. It’s ugly, but
it’s beautiful. Tere’s no vivisected cow here, just
degraded, marred, scarred beauty. Like life."
