About Me

I am Gary Cutrell, a freelance photographer, born on a hog and chicken farm near Indianapolis, Indiana in 1947. I have two brothers and one sister, two children and two grandchildren. I moved to Fort Valley, Georgia in 1953, with my parents and family to a 640 acre farm in Peach County, Georgia. We grew pecans, soybeans and such, and milked a small herd of about 80 Holstein cows. I was in three different rock bands in high school. I played lead guitar, a Gibson es 335 tdc, with humbucking pickups! I am 69 years old. I became interested in photography at age 12, when I went on a field trip at school. I Studied at the Famous Photographer's School, and trained  under top photographers of Life Magazine, Look, People, and others from 1970 to 1974. I worked on the farm until 1967, and then went into the US Air Force to become a jet engine mechanic. I was stationed at Charleston AFB, and worked on C124, C141, and C5 aircraft. I was a jet engine mechanic, and worked on small gas turbines also.  After the Air Force, I worked as a draftsman for a prominent landscape architect for 4 1/2 years. I hold one US patent, so far, and have another one in the works. Worked on F-15 Fighter aircraft for 21 years as an aircraft mechanic,... a damned good mechanic, I must say! Designed several tools for the USAF that I never got paid for, but they are still using them. I shot for four years as a door to door location photographer out in the country, on weekends, mostly country folks....  They called me "Pitcha Man". I have done about 75 magazine covers, about 300 brochures, about 12 billboards, and have lit and somewhat directed a number of television commercials. Also photographed over 500 weddings.I worked as a base photographer at Warner Robins Air Force Base for 19 years. They begged me to give up my F-15 job to work for them. My primary duties there was studio work, shooting about 3,000 portraits per year. I also did the plane crashes, murders, investigation, the grip and grin, and ceremonies, and a lot of other stuff there. I do portfolio work, portraits, life style, advertising, and fashion , wedding, and artistic stuff whenever I can find a model that is actually serious about it! I think I like fashion and advertising the most! I shoot from the hip alot! I also do 'shutter-drag' maybe more than I should!  When I take a model out, I tend to be a "drive-by, guerilla" Shooter, looking for whatever background material is available at the moment! I also do very well-planned photoshoots, as well!  A good model "Shows-Up" and sometimes calls, and says...." I will be over in Ten Minutes". I've been moonlighting as a photographer for nearly 45 years, sometimes making more money than my day-job pays. I paint also. Google me and you'll see 'em. They don't look like photographs!  I have used the Rollei, Hasselblad, Nikon, Canon, and Contax systems. At the present time, I'm using Nikon, Fujifilm, and Sony cameras. My favorite studio light system is Dyna-Lite, my favorite reflectors are the California Sunbounce, and my own brand ... the Vue-Thru !! My favorite light stands are Matthews C-Stands, and my favorite tripod is Gitzo with a Gitzo quick-release head. It's more fun to try to do stuff than not to have tried at all ! All my work is usually jpeg, because jpeg works fine when you tend to nail the exposure, and I learned how to shoot with Kodachrome, and you certainly had to nail the exposure or else you ended up with nothing but a big mess.... haha... And the workflow is better for me, using jpeg. I may use tiff or raw when shooting an advertisement for somebody....
