The Off-duty Dress Code for Models

Modeling is a visual business. Much of what we do as models relies on outer beauty. This is perhaps the reason why models, both off- and on-duty, often appear to show a lack of concern for their outer appearance. Models can be so tired of being primped and pulled and overly “done up” that their subconscious revenge is to rebel by purposely showing up to jobs sloppy and undone. They know they’re about to be transformed into a swan, so who cares if they play the role of the ugly duckling? I’ll tell you who cares –the people who matter.

With most modeling jobs, you’re usually instructed by your agent to come with clean hair and a fresh face with minimal or even no makeup. It’s important to have neutrally painted, clean nails (both on hands and toes) at all times unless otherwise instructed. You arrive as a blank canvas so the photographer, stylist, and makeup artist can easily visualize you as the beautiful character they’re about to create.  But what about your outfit? You can still be stylish and appear effortlessly beautiful in a simple ensemble for every occasion.

What to Wear to the Shoot

A soft, loose-fitting maxi dress paired with a lightweight scarf that can double as a shawl is always a safe bet (especially considering that studios are often freezing). Avoid anything too constricting as tight clothing can leave unsightly marks on the body; if you’re shooting in lingerie or swimwear it will annoy everyone on set if they’re forced to wait for these temporary marks to go away. A flat shoe or simple low heel is also nice and comfortable. Hair should be down and brushed or loosely pulled back. I love a loose, low bun and giant sunglasses to hide a makeup-free face.

What to Wear to the After-party

Always opt for simple. Carry a little black dress with you or maybe a solid-colored wrap dress that makes you feel fabulous. Pair it with a sexy heel and you’re ready to network and work the room! The reason I suggest keeping a post-shoot/post-runway show outfit so muted is to be safe in the (very good) chance the makeup and hairstyle you’ve been assigned is a wild one. I did a runway show recently where I was given a faux hawk with curls. I took it down, applied a little argan oil to the ends of my hair and wrapped it into a sophisticated chignon. Without any ornamentation on my dress, the focus was left on my bold makeup.

What to Wear to the Airport

This is my favorite place to get adventurous with fashion and go full glam! In my fashion blog I share that the airport is my number one place to dress up and try new accessories, but I understand that not everyone is as into “travel fashion” as I am. So I will keep it simple! This is a place you cannot afford to slack off when it comes to style — you never know who from the modeling industry you could run into at any time. Yes, you want to be comfortable, but you should also look put together. This means NO clothing resembling workout gear or pajamas. NO messy topknots. NO sneakers.  Here’s my rule: Isn’t is so easy and so much more chic to opt for a pretty flat shoe as opposed to a sneaker? To wear a simple all-weather trench coat instead of a hoodie? Make a few swaps like this to appear more polished. It’s never a bad thing to look like you planned your look and made an effort.

The point, dear models, is that if you don’t take the extra five minutes to look your very best, you’re hurting your own image. Think about how you’re being perceived by others. Professional dressing and manners should never be reserved only for when the camera is rolling. Remember, you’re representing the most important brand you will ever work for: Yourself.
