Thanks for mentioning flow posing again and how it usually is a frame in between a “pose” that captures the best image.

Modeling is not that difficult if you are a photographer that knows how to be a director as well. You can not just start taking photographs of your models and expect them to do the rest. Models need to be properly motivated. Models need to know what the emotion you are looking for in your photographs. I am an artist that also takes photos for my work. If I need the model to look like she is missing the person who is looking at the artwork then I try and get her to look at the camera as a person and to think of someone she really misses. I want the person in the artwork and the person looking at the artwork to be having a one on one experience. Sometimes you need the model to be in her own world and she doesn’t notice the person looking at the artwork. See where I am going with this? Just because you can pick up a camera and shoot photos that doesn’t make you a photographer. And not all women that pose for a photo can be a model. Modeling is like acting, you need to be convincing and the photographer is the director. You can shoot tons of photos and hope you find one that looks good but if you take the time to shoot what you want you take less time to get it right. I am an artist without a huge budget to pay models thousands of dollars for hours of shooting time. This is just the way I work and it has for the last 20 years worked well for me.

Hi Jill, I also photograph many models (in Edinburgh, Scotland) and coach the newbies as best as I can, but this has helped a lot – I’ll get them to watch this as they get hair and make up done! Lots of photographers see your videos as it comes up in our social media feeds, and us professionals are dedicated to keeping on learning! Through us lots of models will get to see your videos, so they have a big impact.
I tell everyone on set – always – that it’s everyone’s job to get a great photo, from the assistants, stylists, MUAs and of course the model and photographer.

Jill, great instruction on sexy eyes and thank you for reminding me about flow posing. I have several models who have extraordinary looks but seem to appear static because they lock the pose instead of moving gradually. I’ll be referring them to your videos.
