Fujifilm X-T3 Preview

Even though Fuji released the new X-H1 in March, it seems as if the world is talking about nothing but Sony, Nikon and Canon mirrorless cameras. Full frame mirrorless cameras are all the rage, and outside of the Fuji GFX 50s (which is actually a medium format digital camera), Fuji doesn’t make any. But that’s just fine as the new Fuji X-T3 could put the mirrorless camera world on notice.

The Fuji X-T3 is more than an upgrade over the X-T2. It’s an evolution. It has a brand new back-illuminated 26.1MP X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor and X-Processor 4 image processor with no optical low pass filter. About that new sensor, Fuji states:

“Utilizing the unique color filter array of X-Trans CMOS sensors to control moiré and false colors, it is the first APS-C back-illuminated structure sensor with phase detection pixels distributed across the surface to improve image resolution without compromising signal to noise ratio.”

This new X-Processor 4 image processor has four cores and is so fast that it can process images 3X faster than any current camera Fuji makes in the X line up. Three times faster! All of that processing power changes the X-T3, turning it into something so powerful that it’s the first mirrorless digital camera that’s capable of internal 4K/60P 4:2:0 10bit recording. The first. Let that sink in after months of full-frame camera news from Sony, Nikon, and Canon. The new Fuji X-T3 is also the first mirrorless digital camera with an APS-C or larger sensor that is capable of shooting 4K/60P 4:2:2 10bit video with an HDMI output.

When everyone else is shouting bigger is better, Fuji is shouting refinement is better. Electronic View Finders are something that keeps DSLR fanatics from making the switch to mirrorless cameras. Some shooters feel that looking at a screen is not the same as a live new as there can be image lag and the colors are not always accurate. The X-T3 has a new (EVF) with a gigantic 3.69-million-dots with a refresh rate of 100fps, a magnification ratio of 0.75x and a lag time of just .005 seconds.

Fuji has also enhanced the autofocus on the X-T3 immensely. The phase detection AF covers the entire frame with 2.16M phase detection pixels. They also increased the low light AF limit from -1EV to -3EV, which is a very useful two stops increase from the last model. Also, that super fast X-Processor 4 has improved the speed and accuracy of the AF and Face and Eye AF which are both now available in video mode as well.

The X-T3 also steals the Color Chrome Effect from their medium format GFX 50s and puts it in a camera half the price. The Chrome Effect is renowned for its ability to shoot high contrast colors with shadows without losing details.

Fuji also refined the 3″ back touch screen, dropped the native ISO to 160 and enlarged some of the dials and wheels to make them more ergonomic. It also has Bluetooth 4.2 for wireless connectivity, 16 film simulation modes and access to all of Fuji’s X mount lenses.

The battery life is probably still not great as they’re releasing a new battery grip as well which will add more weight to the camera, but the X-T3 is pretty light as is. The lack of 5 axis image stabilization is surprising as it’s a main feature of the X-H1. But for the price? This is an affordable high-end mirrorless camera that should cost hundreds of dollars more. We’re really excited to get our hands on one and see what it can do.

    Here’s a genuine fan! Ever since Fuji came out with the Fuji S3 Pro, I’ve loved Fuji. I had two of the S3 Pros (one I bought new and a used one as backup). When the S5 Pro came out and critics and Pros alike raved about the finest color reproduction of ANY camera (it reproduced color similar to Canon & Nikon with a Circular Polarizer attached) , plus its ability to capture detail in shadows and highlights others could only get thru multiple exposure with varying apertures, I sold the new S3 and bough the first S5 that became available used (the new ones were $5,000 in 2005). When Fuji announced that they were no longer going to service the DSLR line in 2008, I purchased THREE more used S5 Pros as back ups and for parts as I had talked to Fuji America in NY and they said they would service my defective camera (if one ever became defective) replacing any defective part from one camera with a good part from another at just a cost for labor. That was NINE years ago and I still have FOUR perfectly working S5 Pros! A rep at Fuji America told me a customer sent in an S5 Pro for ‘whatever’ as it had 250,000 actuations on it and he was worried that it MIGHT ‘conk out’! As to resolution between my S3 Pro and a Canon T2i both with almost identical Tamron SP lenses, the S3 Pro’s 12.2 Mp out resolved the Canon’s 18.1 Mp! As far as I’m concerned, Fuji is Magic!
