The New Model's Guide to the Industry and Scams
Welcome... if you are reading this, you are probably a new model. Please, take the time to read this guide compiled by fellow MM'ers to help you. If you are in need of a mentor or just a little help, check out this thread The topic we will dive into first will be scams. In your MM Inbox or in your regular e-mail, you will get messages asking you to come to a fashion show or come to shoot with some magazine in another country. This should be your first clue that something isn't legit. This isn't a dig at anyone, but why would a magazine/fashion designer fly some unknown model (who more than likely doesn't fit the fashion model standard) overseas? It doesn't happen. And, most models are booked through agencies. The second clue, and probably the most important one, if they say they will send you a check for more than they are offering to pay you and they want you to cash it and send the remainder back to them... IT IS A SCAM... The check will bounce. Most banks are hip to this scam and will probably tell you it's a scam. Also...If someone asks you to do an interview over a webcam, it is a SCAM.... Run far far away.... That is all. You can use these resources if you still aren't sure... www.google.com , http://www.newmodels.com/Nigeria.html , http://www.hotscams.com/blogs/4/Learnin … d-way.html , http://www.snopes.com/fraud/employment/airfare.asp , http://www.fakechecks.org/ . Also... use the Search Function provided by Plastic Puppet.... millions of threads have been started, odds are, if you do a search you will find the exact same scam you received. Some scam e-mails will drop names in order to gain a sense of validity. Here's is an actual example of a scam that's currently running: From an FHM Representative about SCAM CASTINGS: Another question that often comes up, deals with where you fit in the industry. By going to these links, they will answer all your questions: Mainstream Modeling (i.e. Fashion, Editorial and Commercial) and Plus-Sized Modeling And, for all my Gorgeous Glamour models out there.... the beautiful Dara_w Another thing a model has to be sure of are her MEASUREMENTS. Next.... everyones favorite topic...Nudes! Doing/shooting nudes doesn't make someone a whore/pervert.... Even high fashion involves some sort of nudity (be it topless, implied or full nudity). But, only do nudity if you are completely comfortable. No one would/should ever force you into doing something you just arenât ready to do. You donât have to do nudity, but outside of the fashion world, it will limit your paid work opportunities. That doesnât mean that if you arenât fashion material you have to do porn. There are various outlets that use nudity in a tasteful manner. Body Modifications They can enhance and also hinder. For non-mainstream models, tattoos/piercings/other enhancements arenât usually a big deal⦠itâs mostly the preference of the photographer. But, for commercial and fashion models, there is a Customer and you could lose out on a big job if the Customer is adamant on using a non-modified model. You really have to think whatâs more importantâ¦Your modifications or your potential career. For the sake of your career and reputation, DO NOT start an outing thread in ANY of the forums. They always turn into a he-said/ she-said pissing match and they are against the forum rules https://www.modelmayhem.com/p.php?thread_id=240317 . In the end, you will do more damage to yourself than the person you are outing. ESCORTS... yes, the dreaded escorts.... Asking the general population what their take on escorts is a waste of time. The person you should ask is the photographers you plan on working with. COPYRIGHTS As a model, you do not own the copyright to the images a photographer takes of you. Unless they have given you the copyrights, in writing, which is very very rare for them to do. Even if you pay for the shoot, you do not own the copyrights. Just like if you go to the store and buy "Borat" on DVD you do not own the copyright to that movie. You have only bought a sort of "license/release" to use that one copy. This applies to the USA, every country has different laws. From Jessalyn... Some tax guidance for those who are new at filing tax returns to include their modeling career: Thanks to: Apr 12 08 09:08 pm Link nice thread ![]() Apr 12 08 09:17 pm Link Thanks... I figured the old ones could use a make-over... and having one thread instead of two is always better. Apr 12 08 09:18 pm Link I would put this in the Newbie forum instead, where it will be of most use. Apr 13 08 12:34 am Link Do you think the newbies will actually take the time to READ all that? Hell no, they are WAY too MySpace cute for that... Apr 13 08 12:39 am Link -Jean- wrote: Actually, it's supposed to be here. It's an update of the Guide already at the top of the forums. Most newbies skip the newbies forum and head right here to ask the oft-repeated questions that they are determined to ask. So it makes sense to leave it here, where hopefully they will see it, click on it, read it, then read it again, and continue on their merry way. The difference between this and the email I had gotten is I didn't get it through MM, nor did the person say that he was affilated with MM, or anyone else for that matter. Is it BS? Here is the email: Aug 11 08 07:01 pm Link Thought I'd bump this with this link: http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-201-984-7455/ My brother got contacted on an internet dating website he's a member of and... you guessed it, Nigerian Scam, in a weird kinda way--some girl needed $ for a plane ticket home, and could she send money to my bro and have him give money to another friend of hers--but this wasn't all in one email, it was over a series of conversations. The phone number (201.984.7455) was listed on the package his check came in, so he looked it up... judging from the comments, it seems it's a popular number for scammers to use. Figured I'd pass on the info. Sep 16 08 01:26 pm Link I *heart* you Fifi for doing this thread but i fear it will all be in vain.. cause no matter if all the information is stapled to their forehead we will still get threads about scams, nudes, escorts, pay and flakes... Sep 16 08 02:14 pm Link FiFi...I'd love it it all mods were to cut and paste this thread every time a new "scam warning pops up" Sep 16 08 02:19 pm Link It would be great if every model, new or old read these posts, but don't hold your breath. It's extremely difficult just to get most of them to read a 3 paragraph email message and respond back with something other than a 5 word single sentence even when they have expressed interest ins something. Sep 16 08 02:30 pm Link Helpful. Thank you. Mar 17 09 04:33 pm Link WoW, that was very nice to read! Thanks!!!!!!!! May 14 09 11:25 pm Link I agree, it should be a Newbie Bible. I received bunch of those emails but some good MM ppl warn me before. Thanks for that Jun 01 09 08:55 pm Link Good job Fifi! Jun 02 09 08:25 am Link Thanks FiFi, i agree its all best in one thread rather than sifting through a few, very helpful and much appreciated. Im new and may be suspicious if I got a scam email but I wouldn't know what to do, now I do, thanks on behalf of all of us newbies...well the ones who read it anyway...will be their BIG loss... xXx Jun 02 09 09:32 am Link thank you very, very, very much.. :] i hope every newbie takes the time to read this.. it is of GREAT help!! Jul 25 09 11:08 pm Link Gosh, you have low opinion on newbies:) I read it thoroughly, and i'm very gratefull for posting it. Thanks:) Aug 18 09 02:30 pm Link Hi thank you so much for this post. I just got an email form a person claiming to freelance for a new store that opened up in California named exclusive wears. She sent me a check for $3850 and told me to keep $350 and give the rest to a wardrobe stylist. I didn't want to cash it in because I was afraid on whether or not it was a scam. I googled all over for this company and found nothing but forums on mm warning me about these people. I also read the article about the scam in nigeria. This really opened my eyes. Thanks so much. This will not happen to me again. Aug 26 09 01:15 am Link This is was the email that I recieved one I got the check and this is what I wrote back. Dear Cely, I am happy to inform that your payment is on the way You will be getting the payment any moment from now, I think by now you should be preparing for the job,all you need to do is, Take the check to your bank today and get it cashed as soon as possible, deduct your payment of $350 from the funds sent to you $3850 and have the rest Money sent to the WARDROBE STYLIST who will be getting all the clothings you will need for our shoot, she is from Texas and you will need to send the rest of the funds to her Via WESTERN UNION MONEY TRANSFER. So below is the Wardrobe Stylist's information... Jennifer May 300 Amie Lane Pearland, TX 77584 So after sending the money you will get back to me Via email with the below information from WESTERN UNION . 1) 10 digit WESTERN UNION control number [ MTCN ] 2) Exact Amount Sent at WESTERN UNION Desk. 3) Information Used While Sending the Money (Name,Address,City,State.) Note that you are to use part of the Company's money to pay the Western Union Charges. So you are to have this proceed because we have to make necessary arrangements in you knowing the other Models you will be working with and get used to each other. hope to work with you soon and get back to me A.S.A.P. Regards, Kim. This was my reply to her email: Ok I recieved the check for $3850, but i have another problem, major problem: This job offer is becoming to confusing as suspicious to me. First of all why didn't you just pay me the $350.00 and call it a day. Why do I now have to go out of my way to take the rest of the money out of my checking account to send it to the "wardrobe stylist". I think this is a fraudulent check that you want to bounce so that not only do i pay a bank fee, I also loose out on $3,850 FROM MY OWN MONEY!!! I don't want to have anything to do with this. This sounds weird. I also looked you up all over google and people have complained about this same exact email. I hope you feel good about ruinning people's lives and taking their rent money. I can't believe you even say God Bless you in the emails. What kind of God do you believe in??? I don't know but my God don't like people like you. Eventually you and whomever else is involved will have a bad end. Aug 26 09 02:04 am Link Ok, I know they said no outing but what if you've come across castings here that turned out to go nowhere? I'm talking you set went out and oh hell no. I've had a few episodes (one where I kept up with other models that had the same experience) and I feel like MM should be warned as they KEEP POSTING THE SAME ADS. I have a current experience, where there is supposed to be a photo shoot, that I'm required to make to be a part of a 'promotional' group but they only gave a meet location, & will not give the shoot location (among a few other issues). MM needs to know these people, seriously. Please advise & thanks. Sep 17 09 03:16 pm Link i appreciate the listed sources who posted this information! thanx a bunch! Nov 05 09 02:53 am Link thank you!! Dec 10 09 10:33 am Link did i get scammed?? i gave my address info to someone on MM named wale smith, they told me to email jamie bridge, and they said theyre interested in me being in fhm but they said theyd send me 500$ then i would have to pay some fee??!! im so confused. could i have to pay them? because i gave them my address in an email. Jan 02 10 01:18 pm Link graceanna wrote: Good grief...did you not read the information? It's a scam sweetie. Jan 02 10 01:26 pm Link well yea i know its a scam Im not going to be a part of it but my question was am i going to have to pay money to them if they send me anything in the mail? because they have my address. i didnt read about the scams until after i sent them my info.
