I have been talking to a model about a outdoor shoot planned next week, and I said I only normally use natural lighting in my shots, and use of reflectors, and this was the reply I got...
"ok but you cannot get good photos with natural ligt its basic photo  actually"
So guess Im not working with him then.

I'm not an expert in photography in the least, but I know enough to trust someone that does. And that sentence they wrote to you didn't even make sense...

This was done in natural light, indoors with the light coming through a window (no reflectors, lights, etc...I'm almost positive. It was a month ago though so there might have been a reflector. But still. I'm trying to prove your point):

I guess you could work with him if you really wanted to...knowing that he doesn't know that indoor light is a weak attempt at imitating natural outdoor light. wink

p.s. edit to add a picture that was shot outdoors, with only a reflector, as it was February and at dusk https://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/p … 2#28415742

I was going to dispute what that person responded until I saw they said "actually." I mean, if they say "actually" that makes the preceding statement a matter of fact.

Perhaps the llama has been watching too much True Blood?

Thank you! In my opinion, it's always best to be around those who show a desire to learn and defer to the ones with the knowledge. That's how I do it...

I actually prefer natural afternoon/evening light.
hmm
It seems less harsh to me.
Lots of good photos can be obtained from such lighting.

Tell her that you'd like to test shoot and see if she likes the outcome.

Evening and early morning when the sun is rising or setting are called 'the golden hours' for a reason. Thanks for your input. xx

Maybe the op should direct the model to Neil Kirks port, one of UK best natural light photographers also works a lot in the States.

Click on photographers and select Neil Kirk.

That is by far the stupidest thing I've ever heard, the best light is natural light. Indor lighting is used to try to imitate natural light! This model is either really stupid or just started modeling like yesterday lol

I use natural light on location, all the time and have never used reflectors, sometimes fill in flash. Models are entitled to their opinion but in this case theyre wrong

Damn...all my shots are natural light AND I don't even use a reflector.  Guess I'm relegated to being a "basic photographer".  lol

I have been trying, and still am trying, but he is having none of it. He obviously feels he knows more than me about lighting a model, and this has been one of his replies..."yes i understand what you mean natural ligt is important but you need to use other extra light to expose and highlight particular parts "
So with someone like this, I think I'm losing the will.

You only say this because you have never seen good indoor light.  smile  LOL  It all seriousness, the "best" light is the light that works and gives you the look you want.  A good guy with strobes can do just as well as a guy with natural light, unless he is trying to light the Grand Canyon.

By the way the OP's model was a guy !

Actually, neither is better.  Light is light.  The only difference is how you influence and capture it.

The image is what matters.

I think he may be responding that on a few of your shots, you have exceeded the dynamic range of the sensor and it doesn't match his view as to what it should look like.

True, but if the yahoo the OP is talking about became a moron, at least it would be a step up...

EDIT: after reading ken's reply above ('to educate'), I thought I might have been too harsh. But I think my reaction to the situation would be that the llama wasn't ill-informed, he was arrogant.

While some may treat natural light as reality , it makes for an excellent diversion when treated in new ways. Most all of what I have done lately is all natural light.
