Am I the only one not on Facebook?  I have a casting going on at the moment and some of you are sending me to facebook to see your work.  Does everyone assume that we are all on facebook and is it professional to send someone there for business?  Since I have no account (and no interest in opening one) you have lost any chance of me hiring you.   R-

While I feel like this posting is a rant, yes, it is unprofessional to send someone a facebook link via casting.

I also refuse to be on FB.

Besides I kill too much time here already. I don't need another time waster.

the plus side of facebook is you can upload any size/any amount of pics you like with no restrictions.. which is very helpful for photographers/models who have hundreds of photos to upload.. many people keep their photography page strictly for portfolio pics and connecting with others in the photography world.

so no falling out of a club/family pics.

maybe your dislike for using social networking for your work is holding you back from finding even more work for yourself, so essentially you are the one losing out, no one else.

just my two cents.

I have an account but I don't use it.  Facebook changes faster than I can keep up with it.  I have a lot of issues that I believe are caused by Facebook.  I pay no attention to messages directing me to Facebook.

I don't understand why people have MM accounts and don't post their best work here.

I love using Facebook to upload more then just modelling photos. It allows friend and family to quickly and easily view my photos and also friends of friends can see them. I also like to throw out promotions especially with days like Valentine's day approaching.

Also more to OP, I kinda like to see a lot of pictures of someone I wanna work with, and not just instagram or bathroom mirror pic's or the MM limit but just the whole range of what someone can do.

Yes.

Why WOULD you want a presence on the largest social networking site on the planet.

So, instead of informing them you don't have a FB account and perhaps provide you with another link, you shut the door completely to make some statement about your dislike of FB? And you hold it against others for referring you to it?

I'm curious. If you saw a great job opportunity with a major corporation and they advised you to review the project specs and similar style images on their FB page, you would be similarly offended by the suggestion? I highly doubt that.

No, there's no mandatory requirement for joining FB. However, many individuals and companies have accounts there for both personal and business. But dismissing it and the people who do use it simply because of your personal dislike for it is cutting off your nose to spite your face.

No business FB here either.. A website trumps FB ALWAYS. I dont care if everyone is using it. Its not professional, its social media.

Really its Greedbook & Trampbook lately. Its become a joke since it became a publicly traded company.

I get the feeling the OP feels his anti-FB stance is some non-conformist badge of honor. It's one thing to not have an account for whatever reason. It's another to hold it against the people who do find it useful.

I'm sure it's just a fad like those portable telephone things people carry around.

Another point. Referring you to FB to view images doesn't require you to join the site. It only requires you to type in a URL...so there need not be any assumption that you're a member or not. There is, however, the assumption that you're willing to click on a link or type.

Do you have an issue when someone directs you to their .com website? Or is it just when you're referred to FB that you're so outraged?

Yes, but a big corporation will have a website first then have you look at their FB.. Only a FB page is not the way to run business if you are a professional. It should be used as an "extra" to your business.

If I were applying for a job or the like I would never send a social media site, Id send my website.

True.  And good point.

I have a website.  It looks like crap because I built it.  I COULD have a pretty nice business website, but I'd either have to spend 3000 hours learning how to build it, or $3000 to have someone else build it for me.  I choose to do neither.

Lots of people testing the waters as models or photographers won't justify the creation of a real site when there are so many free templated options.  And Facebook is a kind of a great equalizer for online presence.  Everyone's Facebook page is formatted pretty much the same.  The only thing different is the content.

So to shit on Facebook as another avenue for interaction, either personally or professionally, is to shit on your potential clients and collaborators who choose to use it as their primary means of contact.

Do what you want.  It doesn't really affect anyone else doing what they want.

I think the point being glossed over here is that we're already ON a website where the work is meant to be hosted.

Common courtesy should suggest that if you plan to apply for a casting and present samples of your work, it should be fairly easy for the person you're trying to impress to view that work.

Providing a link to another site that your intended viewer may or may not be able to get to is stupid. The burden is on the person applying to the casting to make this a simple, easy prospect.  The simplest and easiest way to show someone your work when you're applying to a casting here is to host it here.

Don't want to pay for more photos? Fine, do a great job of picking your best work and showing it here on a free account.  Or get creative and have more than one account here.

If you can't show me that you are the right model in the 15 images you have on Model Mayhem, why on earth do I want to look at even more?  I don't mind the option to see more pics if I want to - but don't respond to my Model Mayhem casting and tell me to go to Facebook because you don't have recent pics here.

I also can't hire you for a nude shoot based of your Facebook shots - since they don't allow nudes, and it seems at times also restrict even tamer content.

I am on Facebook, but I don't care to wait for models to accept my Friend Request before I can see photos - so they better at least have a public photo gallery.

You can get a nice site way cheaper. smile

Ive been down the facebook road, was there for a few years.. its changes were too crappy for me so it was time to say goodbye. The stock market has had a serious negative impact IMO.

I do still have my personal page I just shut down the fan page. My business page also caused me stalkers, poaching, and drama from jealous photographer and models.. Even paying clients were harassed just because they were cute and posted them on my page!

However, I dont diss anyone who uses it at all. Its just not for me and one should always send a website link over a fan page. big_smile

Social Networking can be an amazing platform! How many gigs have you recieved becuase of word of mouth?

Facebook is just another form of "word of mouth"!  Get a professional page, create an online "community" surrounding your work, build connections and get more jobs!

It's just that simple!

I think it depends on your market and clientele.  Mine is commercial and they have little interest in FB..but if my clientele was family/weddings..etc.. I could see it as possible lead for that sort of work.

Hmm I'm curious...do you see FB as an important factor for getting you business?

I just checked my messages here and the last one I read was from a photographer asking me if I had a Facebook account, too funny.

I told him that I had a personal FB account, and a professional website and provided the link. I do see it being used for business more and more, but I prefer to keep those worlds separate.

question for posters in this thread, not the OP:

so do we add FB to the list of adversarial topics here in the forums?
escorts, canon V Nikon, flakes, creepy photographers, art vs porn, TFP vs paid shoots, and the infinite remainder?

ever heard of live and let live?

so you hate FB? I'm sure you are hooked into something that the rest of us hate.

do what works for you.

Yes, I have a FB profile. its linked from my MM profile. If anyone wants to know more about me, FB is a fairly "ok" place to find out? while you are there, check any of the 24 albums I have there? check more references on me? or.........not.

I absolutely agree with you. And of course a large corp. wouldn't only have a FB page but may use it for certain interactions.

But really my point was only to illustrate that there could be times the OP might find it worthwhile to make it over to FB and, more importantly, not to just dismiss those models so quickly.

I know this makes me sound very pro-FB and I am so not (so I do understand the OP may not actually be anti-FB but just not interested in being forced to go there to see someone's work).

FB, MM and business websites all have their place. As do Flickr, Photoshelter and a dozen others. Keep in mind that most of the people on MM are not professionals - they are hobbyists or beginners. You can accept them as they are or move on to someone else.

I was reluctant to join FB, but it has worked out surprisingly well for me. Models may not think about it, but in most cases when they show me their FB they give me a look at their personal life - for better or worse. A couple of times it has helped avoid disaster - for example the model who posted on FB about her boyfriend being a burglar. In contrast, I've also found a few who showed great attitude and strong family connections.

And as it turns out I have booked far more work - paid and trade - through FB than ever on MM.

Although I planned to keep my FB mostly for business as it turns out I have reconnected with a lot of old friends and past colleagues  - some of whom I had lost track of years ago. So it has paid off personally as well.

Having said all that, I am still careful. I always remember all the world can see anything I put on FB (or MM or my own site for that matter) and I don't put up anything I wouldn't want my family, business associates or client prospects to see.

So no, I do not mind if a prospective model sends me a FB link, or anyplace else. It is just one more tool I can use in the selection process.

I don't have an account, can't wait until its time has passed and hate its existence. Without Facebook, I manage to get lots of photo shoots, and don't get found by classmates I've long since forgot.
