I am working on my senior thesis for college right now shooting figure nudes on the subject of body image, and I am working with a lot of individuals that have never posed nude before in their life. I am not generally a nude photographer by trade, but chose the subject because I lost a friend to eating disorders and want to show that the human body is the most beautiful work of art. I have had all sorts of folks of all shapes and sizes come in, and have shot 32 people out of 77 volunteers that I have at the moment. All of them so far have told me that it has been a very liberating experience, how much fun they had..etc. I am also someone who immediately starts talking to people, asking them how they are, joking around (keeping it in the professional realm of course). A photographers demeanor has a lot to do with having a successful shoot I believe. If you find a photographer that makes you feel comfortable with them and inspires you, go for it. I even posed for a few friends, and it is an expressive and beautiful experience. The more you think about it as creating art and testing to see what you can create in an image, the more fun it becomes too. Good luck! Doesn't mean you have to have shot before, but references, reputation, pre shoot communications, whatever it takes for YOU to be comfortable. Apr 05 13 09:14 pm Link For a newbie model or a first timer doing nudes, I usually start with a robe, towel or other light covering and have the model do implied nudes. Then slowly move toward full nudes over a bit of time. This way the model can adjust her comfort zone. I also watch body language. If she just isn't feeling it then I will either slow down or just work within whatever she's capable of doing. I also have each shot appear on a widescreen in real time within view for the model. I'll allow them a moment to view an image without breaking a pose. I get a much better product when the model becomes part of the process. I'll sometimes even place a full length mirror behind me to one side so she can begin to experiment with poses and creativity. It's worked very well 95% of the time. Then, after a bit, I just say "OK, now" and they take off the dress/ robe. We start with full nudes, and after a couple minutes, all is natural, and we can go from there. "Working up to it" typically breeds awkwardness, in my experience. Apr 05 13 10:29 pm Link |
